Summary

The outbreak tore the USA in two. The east remains a safe haven. The west has become a ravaged wilderness. They call it the Evacuated States. It is here that Henry Marco makes his living. Hired by grieving relatives, he tracks down the dead to deliver peace. Now Homeland Security wants Marco, for a mission unlike any other. He must return to California, where the apocalypse began. Where a secret is hidden. And where his own tragic past waits to punish him again. But in the wastelands of America, you never know who - or what - is watching you…

Visceral

The title of this review probably says it all. Fantastic novel and fantastic reading. Not for the weak stomached but it's a zombie novel what did you expect.

Intelligent Writing

Great book. Clever, graphic and believable characters. Keeps you entertained throughout, with good pace. Refreshing with a proper hero not in the Hollywood mould.

Good Take on the Zombie Genre

I love zombie stories but they can become a bit samey. This story has all the classic zombie elements, but I love the idea of the zombie threat being contained in one side of the US, and our character /choosing/ to stay on the overrun side in order to look for his wife. He also takes on the job of a 'Return Man' and is hired by people in the safe zone to track down infected family members to bring them and their distraught surviving family members some peace by returning them to the grave. He brings the family member proof by returning items of clothing or jewellery that the zombie was wearing. I also enjoy the idea of the zombies having some kind of basic memory, and returning to places that were important or routine to them in life. This is how Henry tracks family members down.

Some reviewers have complained about this audiobook being too gory. Well, it's a zombie story. Zombies eat people. I understand that different people have different expectations, but if blood and guts bothers you, don't buy a zombie audiobook :)

Very good.

This book is well written and the narrater is brill. This book is up the with "Day by Day Armageddon", "Morning star". As to it go into to much detail, what!! Its a book not a comic, some people.

My first zombie book!

Not a genre of book I have tried before so have nothing to compare it to. Plenty action, the main characters are interesting enough and the story is ok if a little predictable - I suspect that it is probably a quirk with this genre, that some of the characters are really like caricatures of movie actors and that being a bit predictable is probably part of the fun. If you can get into that frame of mind it is not a bad listen. A fair bit of suspending belief to go along with the book, but then its zombies... so what else can you expect to be doing but ignoring reality a bit! I would view it as a bit of fun - not bad, not great and passed some time.... Oh, its very gory, but strangely in an amusing sort of way at times :/ Not a Genre I will rush back to, but I am sure I might try another for a bit of passing time with a fairly simple, but pretty gory, story.

Too much detail

This is a good story but at times the author goes into too much boring detail and you find that after five minutes of listening to the author over explain something you feel the need to skip forward

I hope he never comes back

This is a zombie novel. A fact that the book description doesn't mention. My problem with all these zombie books is that they try to be scientific. They explain zombieism with a virus gone wild. Then the science fails because there are to many large meat eating zombies for the population of animals and people left. They simply can not survive in numbers for so many years.
