About this listen

Ella Black

Quiet. Shy. Awkward.

I used to be that bright, fun girl everyone wanted to be friends with, before I had to carry this dark secret inside. The secret that no one knows.

Now, I'm ruined. Nothing but ashes of the bubbly, young girl I used to be.

I've been running from the past for the last four years, but college will be the perfect, fresh start that I need. Like pushing the reset button on my life. Or so I thought, until I met Nixon Thorne.

Nixon Thorne

Ex-con. Streetfighter. Monster.

I thought starting at The University of Oregon would be a new beginning for me. Getting a chance at freedom, a taste of the real world again, instead of the four cement walls of my prison cell.

That is, until Ella Black stumbled back into my life. She doesn’t remember the boy from high school, the one from the wrong side of the tracks, but I remember her, and I know what she’s hiding.

My head tells me to stay away from her. She is the reason I went to prison, after all. But it still doesn’t stop me from wanting to protect her. From wanting to save her. From wanting her.

Especially since I’m the only one who knows of the dark past she’s running from.

Sweet, romantic and sexy with added drama

Oh a big hell yes from me! This audio gave me all the feels, I love a sweet, protective bad boy, and it would appear that Nixon Thorne has always been protecting Ella Black, even when she didn’t know it. Sweet, shy introvert that she is, never wanting to be confrontational, always worrying about drawing attention to herself. But with the help of Nixon she slowly starts coming out of her shell and putting the past behind her, until the past suddenly comes knocking on her door. Sweet, romantic and sexy with a bit of drama added in the mix. Highly enjoyable audio. Juniper Young narrated both Ella and Nixon perfectly, so much so that I couldn’t even fault her performance of Nixon, let alone Ella

All the feels

Nixon Thorne is starting at the University of Oregon. Striving to be an MMA fighter after a stint in jail, he is trying to get on track with his life. Bumping into Ella Black was not part of his plan. But now that he has, the feeling that he needs to protect her. Ella doesn't recognize Nixon from her high school, and she doesn't realize the tie that they share. Nixon knows her secret and will do whatever he has to, to keep her safe. I have to say, T.Steele has the talent to have the love pour out of this book. I could feel it coming from Nixon. It's not all about their chemistry either. It's about who he is, what he has come from and what he is made of. It just makes this character have so much depth, it's like we are right there with him. Ella is insecure and her lack of confidence makes it so easy for her to lean on Nixon. At the same time, I could feel her as her heart began to open to him. Then we add in the suspense factor which is just off the charts, edge of your seat thrilling and this book is just amazing.

Juniper Young narrates this book well. It's my first listen by her, and I enjoyed her performance, though I felt her voice was a little too young for the content and the ages. She did have good voice changes and her pacing is spot on, moving the story with the emotional charge it has.

I LOVE this book

OMG I love this book. This book is absolutely amazing! Ella and Nixon cross paths in college. Only this wasn't the first time. This book shows how two imperfect people can complete what the other needs. I highly recommend this book. It has a little be of suspense but ends in a HEA.

Read the ebook instead

I'm not a big fan of YA, but I love broken heroes. Nixon is a charmer, and I really enjoyed listening to Ella and Nixon's story.

The narrator is not a good fit, in my opinion. She gives a good performance, but her interpretation of the characters was not up to the same level as the story. It made it harder for me to really bond with the characters.

I also counted at least 4 audio production mistakes, and the mispronunciation of "Willamette" (Will-AM-it, not Willa-met) which should have been caught.

I'd definitely recommend the story to anyone that loves YA, but probably the ebook version instead. I'm a 95% audio reader, too.

I received a free audio review copy in exchange for this honest review.
