About this listen

It is 1916. The world has gone to war, and young Leo Sercombe, hauling coal aboard the HMS Queen Mary, is a long way from home. The wild, unchanging West Country roads of his boyhood seem very far away from life aboard a battlecruiser. Skimming through those West Country roads on her motorcycle, Lottie Prideaux defies the expectations of her class and sex as she covertly studies to be a vet.

In a world torn asunder by war, everything dances in flux: how can the old ways life survive, and how can the future be imagined, in the face of such unimaginable change? How can Leo, lost and wandering in the strange and brave new world, ever hope to find his way home?

Exquisite

This novel moved me to tears. A masterpiece on so many levels. A magnificent evocation of times gone by and the power of the human spirit.

An extraordinary trilogy

The descriptions, the observations, the journeyings, all make these three volumes so alive. Add to this Tim Pears mastery of not telling too much and Jonathon Keeble’s excellent narration makes finishing the third volume like losing a special world.

A wonderful finale to an extraordinary trilogy

A developing love story through the ages, mixed with nature and country life. Beautifully written and narrated - you could listen stand alone but you would really benefit from listening to the trilogy in order

Outstanding writing. Brilliant narration.

Tim Pears is undoubtedly a very fine writer. Many times will listening to this outstanding trilogy I have sat with closed eyes and have pictured the scenes unfolding before me. I've read those chapters again in the books and marvelled at the beauty of the words, written and spoken so well. I felt the terror of the Battle of Jutland, the beauty of travelling through Devon and Cornwall, the love between Leo and Lottie and the sheer beauty of the descriptions of nature and their involvement with horses.

Love it!

A lovely trilogy - no massive story leading to a big climax - just a gentle day to day journal of country folk.
Well told and researched.
