About this listen

Nick Cutter, author of #HorrorBookTok sensation The Troop, returns with a heart-pounding novel of terror about a young woman searching for her missing friend and uncovering a shocking truth.

On a sunny morning in June, Margaret Carpenter wakes up to find a new iPhone on her doorstep. She switches it on to find a text from her best friend, Charity Atwater. The problem is, Charity's been missing for over a month. Most people in town - even the police - think she's dead.

Margaret and Charity have been lifelong friends. They share everything, know the most intimate details about one another . . . except for the destructive secret hidden from them both. A secret that will trigger a chain of events ending in tragedy, bloodshed, and death. And now Charity wants Margaret to know her story - the real story. In a narrative that takes place over one feverish day, Margaret follows a series of increasingly disquieting breadcrumbs as she forges deeper into the mystery of her best friend - a person she never truly knew at all . . .

lots of ups and downs here, not his best work.

the story seemed like its been thought of in a haste, with way to much background to the characters and to little actual flow in the story.. and the narrator is just missing any kind of ability to make it even kind of exciting.

An oddly paced, mostly okay story let down by a somewhat muddled structure and finale.

THE QUEEN delivers on body horror and well written gore sequences but I feel it’s let down by a story that for the most part is interesting but leaves a lot to be desired by the end.

I disliked the last three chapters greatly. The quick and heavy handed sum up of the story, a barrel roll through the chunk of story and aftermath that’s is interesting to everyone but the writer. I felt it left our protagonists story somewhat unfinished which was a great shame as Part 3 was really good.

My first Nick Cutter but certainly not my last. I enjoyed the writing, the horror and the set up just not a fan of the muddled execution.
