About this listen
A Space Marine Battles Audiobook
Faced with an ork invasion of one of their recruiting worlds, Piscina IV, the Dark Angels initially believe the threat to be minimal, but a renewed xenos offensive takes the Chapter by surprise..
LISTEN TO IT BECAUSE
Captain Belial and the Dark Angels fight to free a key planet from the grip of the orks in this classic Warhammer 40,000 story told anew – including the infamous tale of Scout-Sergeant Namaan’s final battle.
THE STORY
Faced with an ork invasion of Piscina IV, the 3rd Company of the Dark Angels believes the threat to be minimal. As enemy numbers continue to increase, their commander, Captain Belial, insists that his Company are strong enough to resist. But Scout-Sergeant Naaman knows just how dangerous this foe can be, and when a renewed offensive takes the Dark Angels by surprise, the orks swarm towards Kadillus Harbour.
Belial, Naaman and their fellow Astartes must fight a desperate siege at Kadillus, knowing that if they do not hold out until Imperial reinforcements arrive, the planet will be lost. Little do the Dark Angels realise the technological power available to the xenos, and the true scale of the threat they face.

Great listen
Superbly narrated this book restored my faith in the dark angels, having listened to Lazarus prior to this and being somewhat bored by it this was refreshing

Solid, unspectacular entertainment
I've been finding the recent glut of offerings from Black Library newbie authors a pretty lacklustre lot. So while the Space Marine Battles series that The Purging of Kadillus is a part of is generally everything I dislike about 40k novels, I found myself gravitating towards this in search of a simple reliable story by an author who knows what they're doing when it comes to writing 40k and military scifi in general. And Gav Thorpe is definitely all of those things. Did I get what I craved? Yes I did..
Let's be clear, The Purging of Kadillus will never win any literary awards. It's not even a particularly stand out 40k novel. It's just a simple story about a relatively straightforward orks v astartes conflict that proceeds to its conclusion with no real shocks or plot twists. Nobody here goes on a journey of self-discovery or redemption, they just have a good old scrap. And you know what? It's pretty darn satisfying. Maybe narrator Andrew Wincott has something to do with that—he leans into the most simple dialogue with a relish that would be considered a bit over the top by some, but for me he's perfect for this kind of material.
Veteran 40k author Gav Thorpe certainly knows how to write space marines, and Dark Angels in particular. Here, it's a real refreshing change that we get no chasing of the Fallen, giving the Dark Angels an opportunity to act as near to being the good guys as anyone ever gets in 40k. Structurally, the book jumps around, telling individual stories about the experience of one character in the fighting then another, which just about keeps it all from getting too monotonous. The tale of the PDF trooper who comes into contact with the Dark Angels is actually quite touching. Otherwise, like I said, there's no real character development, intricate plot or underlying messages here, just a lot of orks and space marines doing what they do best. And you know what—It was precisely what the doctor ordered.

A long, long battle that.. was boring.
First book I listened to that I thought was boring. I found myself losing focus and drifting off into other thoughts several times.
didn't even bother going back to what i missed
