About this listen
The people and businesses of London are quickly recovering from the ravages of the plague, none faster than the Court of Charles II where excess, corruption and debauchery has rebounded at a frenetic pace. In Westminster, in the haphazard corridors of White Hall Palace, plans are afoot for a grandiose ball in honour of a long-dead but English-born Pope. Meanwhile, the markets and coffee houses in the city are awash with rumours of war and portents of a coming disaster, inflamed by uncensored newssheets and the wagging tongues of dissatisfied citizens.
Mysterious killings at both ends of the capital have been caused by the use of an unusually long, slender blade, and Thomas Chaloner is ordered to investigate. The only common thread is the victims' connection to the Worshipful Company of Poulters, whose members are struggling to keep ahead of London's enormous demand for eggs. But this leads him into a tapestry of conspiracy, outlandish claims of the Second Coming, the reappearance of a number of regicides and ever more brazen killings.
As the date of the great ball looms closer, Chaloner fears that there is a dangerously credible conspiracy against the throne, and he has very little time to prevent history from repeating itself....

An odd one
I realise it must be difficult to find endless plots and while the oddballs around him and Challenor himself are always enjoyable, this plot felt a bit of a mess. In parts enjoyable (I love 17th century religious nutters) and in others , well, silly. A bit of a Curate’s…oh never mind.

Intricate plot
Poorly narrated with changes in accents and monotone at times. Clearly recorded at different times

Repetitive and boring
It has been quite a while since I read/listened to a book in the Chaloner series and I was looking forward to the character development and a good plot in what was an extraordinary period, BUT..
The plot seemed tortuous on the one hand and deeply improbable and implausible on the other. The main characters seemed almost a side show and very wooden and the other people shallow and poorly defined. The basis of the story turning on eggs seems frankly silly, and(I apologise if I am mistaken) ignores that eggs were such a luxury food before the Victorian period.
Worst of all, is that in the first half of the book there were repeated phrases or summaries of the story so far - so much so that I thought my machine had somehow gone into a loop mode.
Very disappointing, I would suggest skipping this book and trying one of the earlier volumes instead.

Riveting Story
Book 15 in this series carried on from the previous foreteen stories. Such an entertaining set of books. A special thanks to the narrator who added to the overall experience.

Beware the fire of 1666
An enjoyable listen. Bit complex in places but can always rerun if needed. Enough said

Eggceedingly fowl
Convoluted plot in which poulty and eggs take on a prominent role, the whole thing is eggceedingly boring and drags. Don't be misled by the cover this book isn't about the fire of London.

Eggs
If I hear the word egg again I’ll go mad. Normally I enjoy this authors books but this one drove me nuts. I’m afraid, although I persevered to the end, I did not enjoy this book at all. I’m glad I’m done with it. Sorry
