About this listen

The villainess is back!

Follow the further adventures of the villainess Capricious Whim as she suffers the consequences of killing the double-crossing fixer who had set her up. It's hard being a villain...and even harder when the local contacts think you could be out to get them. Realizing she needs to have someone to watch her back and negotiate jobs for her, Caprice is in a sticky situation...but she needs the perfect partner.

Enter Regulus, a villain from the "bad old days". The psychic operative has got the experience, subterfuge, and brutality she needs to succeed in her goals. In him, Caprice meets her equal in power, bloodlust, and desire. A meeting between their minds results in a dark, dangerous passion, a thirst unable to be quenched with just one drink.

There's only two problems...he's an interdimensional fugitive from Axis Earth, an alternate dimension where the Axis powers won World War II, and his help comes with a price. When Caprice agrees to help him get free from the hunters who pursue him, a seemingly straightforward task becomes complicated...fast.

Any additional comments?

I received a complementary copy from the right's holder of A Prince of Cups, via Audiobook Boom, in exchange for an honest review. I had not read the first in this series so was thrown straight into the weird world of Caprice without previous knowledge. Not that this mattered as all that was needed to start this journey with her was succinctly revealed in the initial pages.
Alana Melos' writing is imaginative, visual and very visceral. Her main protagonist, from who's viewpoint this story and all associated emotions are related, is tough, sexy and driven by self confidence and lust - for sex, blood, pain and power. This did become a trifle tedious for me at the beginning but I warmed to her, somewhat, later. Never a dull moment in this book, whether the fighting is sexual, physical or simply for personal psychological dominance.
I had problems with the narration, unfortunately. At first hearing, Ms.Wolfe (mmm - rather appropriate) is the perfect voice for Caprice, sexy and pleasant and she reads at a very fast pace. However, despite her impeccable reading, i soon found myself irritated by the delivery, with constant downturns in the timbre at phrase endings and frequent unrelated-to-text pauses, which contrasted with the near absence of gap between chapters. This became so distracting, I was only able to listen for short periods and, by half way through the book had to will myself back to continue.
Would I recommend this book? Yes, but I would have to choose the person carefully: not everyone would appreciate the sheer joy in violence and erotic lust content of the story. But it is bright and surprising with, dare I say it? - a strange innocence.
And I would also say, "Read the printed book."
