About this listen

FROM THE #1 BESTSELLING AUTHOR OF THE HARRY BOSCH AND LINCOLN LAWYER SERIES

An electrifying standalone thriller that breaks all the rules!

Death is reporter Jack McEvoy's beat: his calling, his obsession. But this time, death brings McEvoy the story he never wanted to write - and the mystery he desperately needs to solve. A serial killer of unprecedented savagery and cunning is at large. His targets: homicide cops, each haunted by a murder case he couldn't crack. The killer's calling card: a quotation from the works of Edgar Allan Poe. His latest victim is McEvoy's own brother. And his last...may be McEvoy himself.

Flashback to a different time. 1996.

Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed this book but I have to admit the explanations of how you can fax from a computer and how a digital camera works had me laughing out loud. Did we really ever live without Google? So yes it's a bit dated but still a good story with the usual twists and turns. If you can get it in a sale (as I did) it's worth a listen.

A bit dated now, but still worth a read.

I've read/listened to all of the Harry Bosch books, but only recently became aware of the Jack McEvoy series. The Poet is the first in the series. I'm only about a third of the way through, but I'm enjoying it so far. As other reviewers have mentioned it is a bit dated, having been written in 1996. Still, it's Michael Connelly, always worth the time. One thing I've noticed is, despite the excellent narration, the quality of the audio recording, at least through my iPhone, is rather poor. It sounds like he is recording in a cave. Perhaps this is because it is old and the equipment wasn't so great back then.

dated, but good

A good book, well read. What I didn't realise at the point of purchase was the age of it. Clunky narrative of 'mobile laptop computer' and 'fax modems', 'pagers out of battery' and 'waiting for a dial up connection' really date this book in the early 90's and detract from what would have been (at the time) a great listen.

Worth a listen/read

Narrator is excellent, the story is interesting but the final twist for me however is disappointing.

Gripping with unexpected twists and turns.

I was completely absorbed. Wonderful escapism, likeable characters and a fantastic twist. Michael Connelly has delivered again.

Enjoyed this book from start to finish. For me this one one of those that I couldn't stop listening to.

1st class

Wow, what a book it kept me on my toes. Totally freaked me out sometimes. The narrator delivered such a sense of evil, I felt like shouting out. My 1st Michael Connelly book. It won't be my last.

EXCITING AND CLEVER

A really good book, and one of the more exciting I have heard.

Well read and voiced, well paced, really a good example of an audiobook.

Loved it!

Really enjoyed this book, possibly even more than the Harry Bosch series of which I’ve listened to many.
