About this listen

Brought to you by Penguin.

What might your family say about you if you weren't in the room....?

Escape with the new Sophie Kinsella romcom about family love, family tensions and family secrets.

Effie's still not over her parents splitting up a year ago and her dad and his awful new girlfriend are posting photos everywhere (with the hashtags #viagraworks and #sexinyoursixties). Now they're selling the beloved family home and holding a 'house-cooling' party, but Effie hasn't been invited.

Then she remembers her precious Russian dolls, safely tucked away up a chimney, and has no choice but to go back for them. She'll just creep in, grab the dolls and leave. No one will know she was ever there.

But Effie can't find the dolls. And as she secretly clambers around dusty attics, hides under tables and tries (and fails) to avoid bumping into her ex-boyfriend, she discovers unexpected truths about her family - and even about herself.

With time running out, Effie starts to wonder if the only way to find out what's really going on with her family is to simply crash the party...

Expect shocking secrets, hilarious mix-ups and an unforgettable romance!

Heartwarming

A beautiful story of love, soul connection, laying down roots and family. Really enjoyed this one, nice easy listen, very funny in places, quirky and upbeat. Brilliantly narrated. Five stars from me.

An easy listen

Another good story from Sophie Kinsella. Easy to listen to, not too complicated .

Slow start

I found this difficult to get into and nearly gave up. I found the characters quite annoying and the plot far fetched and predictable. However by half way through it got better and I managed to see it through. I think the main problem is that I didn’t like the narrator- I find her voice a bit whiney and too high pitched. Or maybe I have just grown out of Sophie Kinsella stories.

Another good read from Sophie

I love the narrator she is utterly engaging and perfect for this type of book. The story is just sweet and easy to listen to. The only thing missing for me is Sophie's humour coming through more. I missed that side to her. However, it's a good listen and I wasn't disappointed.

It grew on me

I love Sophie Kinsella - but this one didn’t grab me from Chapter 1. Don’t give up keep going as it gets better.

Great performance - but not classic Kinsella material

disappointing and very predictable

I've read every Sophie Kinsella book and maybe it's me getting older, but this one felt really flat. it's a predictable take on another middle class family 'drama' but I think overall it was the narrator that drove me potty. the text would state something about a character acting in a particular emotional way, but the voice acting was another emotion entirely.

Funny, happy, relaxing listen, like a wee holiday.

Fun fun fun and happy. Just enough to keep one hooked to the end. Cliché filled break from real life. Loved it.
