Summary

The last time Valerie was in Paris, she was three years old, running from the Nazis, away from the only home she had ever known.

Now as a young woman all alone in the world, Valerie must return to Paris, to the bookshop and her sole surviving relative, her grandfather Vincent, the only person who knows the truth about what happened to her parents. As she gets to know grumpy, taciturn Vincent again, she hears a tragic story of Nazi-occupied Paris, a doomed love affair, and a mother willing to sacrifice everything for her beloved daughter.

Can Valerie and Vincent help each other to mend the wounds of the past? Valerie isn't after a fairytale ending, she only wants the truth. But what is the one devastating secret that Vincent is determined to keep from his granddaughter?

Beautiful story

This was a beautifully written story. Set in Paris during the second world war and 20 years later it is worth listening to

Courage in the face of adversity

I was gripped by the drama of a family during occupied France. This story of courage arouses many feelings of sadness, happiness, love and sacrifice as the protagonist Valerie travels to France to uncover the truth behind her family’s past.

Fantastic story

Amazing narration - story demonstrates how the effects of war doesn’t just end with the war.

Sad to see it end

I really enjoyed this book and in fact was sad to see it end. A great, well paced story with engaging characters, all was set against the backdrop of WW2 and Paris. Beautifully written and well narrated. Will certainly look for more from this author.

A Lovely Story Beautifully Written

This was such a lovely story and so beautifully written. Just recently I have become so interested the World War I and World War II. Even thought I did history at school I remember very little. And I have read many books on the German occupation in France and the French Resistance. But this story was how the war really effected people, people did not want War at all, they just wanted to live in peace. I loved and enjoyed this story so much, and so well written by Lily Graham, this was a nice introduction to her books, and I will definitely be reading more. The narrator Esther Wane was fabulous at reading this, such a beautiful voice and I loved the French accent, I really felt like I was in Paris experiencing this story. Thank you to both Writer and Narrator 📚

Short simple and sweet

Nice WW2 short story set in Paris. Great characters and over two easy to follow time lines.

Esther Warnes narration was magnificent, her male voices were great and accents not too silly and the general reading full of intonation and life. I will definitely remember this narrator when looking at books in the future.

Easy listening

Not as good as I thought it would be. The write up was what I was drawn to and it sounded so good.. unfortunately not so for me.
