About this listen

Brought to you by Penguin.

We know pain when we feel it. We fear it and try to avoid it. But do we know what it really is?

We're currently experiencing a Renaissance in pain science. In recent years, our understanding of pain has altered so radically it's fair to say that everything we thought we knew about pain is wrong. As Dr Monty Lyman reveals, we misunderstand pain - with harmful consequences.

Exploring cutting-edge research and encompassing phantom aches to persistent pain, and interviews with survivors of torture as well as those who have never felt pain, Dr Lyman not only provides hope for reducing and managing pain but takes us to a deeper understanding of what it means to be human.

This is the untold story of pain - our most elusive feeling.

A Royal Society Science Prize shortlisted author.

Well written

As a chiropractor, I deal with persistent pain constantly and have a special interest in it. From a clinician point of view this book is one of the most well written and detailed books I have read. The information can be loading a lot of time and would be unsure if I would recommend for patients sake. However if interested in learning about all many factors influencing us as human beings in protection try this book!

Astonishing

This is an astonishing book that turns on its head much received wisdom about the nature and meaning if physical pain. The concept of rewriting the brain makes huge sense

Giving hope to those with persistent pain

Excellent review of current literature on pain science. The content was excellent and well read. As a person experiencing severe lower back pain currently, this book has given me hope that I can retrain my body and brain to lessen the impact of pain on my life.

Fantastic book for anyone in pain or who is a person!

Brilliant and engaging dash round modern pain sciences. Recommended, if not required reading for every human being, certainly anyone who has persistent pain.

It’s not a deep deep dive but a beautifully written, human and compassionate summary of current understanding, neatly namechecks all the best luminaries of pain research yet has a personal and humorous touch where needed.

A must on any medics or medical academic’s shelf and a book that should be sent to (with subsequent test of reading and understanding!) every policy maker and politician at local to international level.

Well done Monty. It’s superlative. (And read very very nicely as well!)

Fascinating

As a physiotherapist with an interest in persistent pain and complementary therapies I found this book absolutely fascinating. I was reminded of that saying ‘the mind is like a parachute - it only works when open’. I hope this book opens many minds. Thank you Monty.
