Summary

The Eastern Orthodox Church, is the world's second-largest Christian church, with more than 260 million members. It operates as a communion of autocephalous churches, each governed by bishops in local synods. In this classic work Prof. Adrian Fortescue describes in detail the history, structure, and current state of the Orthodox Church. An excellent introduction for those seeking to better understand this historic apostolic church.

A tragically lost opportunity.

Unfairness it must be said that the reading makes the book seem even less competently written than it actually is. The Greek names are well managed but English words are often inexcusably mispronounced, not tomention that Dilino reads as if treproducing a bed-time story. Th obvious assumption that ‘we’ hold THE TRUTH utterly defeats the purpose for which I chose this book, and gives a thoroughly skewed and untrustworthy account of the eastern branches of the Christian vine. Far toooften it is assumed that the author doesn’t need to go into the very topics for which one would naturally. chose the book: stick with JohnJulius Short History of Byzantium for the history and a Dictionary of theeasternchurchfor the rest.
