Summary

Graduate students Zoë and Holli only mean to blow off some steam on their road trip to Las Vegas. But something goes terribly wrong on their way home, and the last time Zoë sees her, Holli is in the clutches of a sadistic killer. Zoë flees with her life, changed forever.

A year later and still tortured with guilt, Zoë latches on to a police investigation where the crime eerily resembles her abduction. Along with a zealous detective, she retraces the steps of that fateful night in the desert, hoping that her memory will return and help them find justice for Holli. Her abductor--labeled the "Tally Man" by a fascinated media--lies in wait for Zoë. For him, she is not a survivor but simply the one that got away.

With an unforgettable heroine, a chillingly disturbed psychopath, and a story that moves at breakneck speed, The One That Got Away is thriller writer Simon Wood at his finest.

Narration was exceptionally wooden

I almost gave up with this book. The female narrator was better with the male parts than the female. She was completely robotic and I wondered whether the book was narrated by a computer voice - it was that bad.

The story was predictable & average, reminding me of a formulaic TV detective episode. I wonder if it would be more captivating with a better narrator.

Can't really recommend this book.

Gripping But Predictable

This kept me interested all the way to the big, but somewhat predictable finale. The story at times was truly exciting and had me gripped wanting to know what was going to happen next, but its weakness for me was that it was formulaic and predictable. Don't get me wrong, I was rooting for Zoë all the way. I really admired and sympathised with her character, though I found her abductor fascinating but at the same time deeply disturbed.

I thought Emily Durante did an admirable job in narrating the story. When I first started listening, I was a little unsure of her narration, but after continuing to listen, I found that her performance really worked well. She had the right style for this story.

Overall, a good listen.

Good plot

Any additional comments?

I enjoyed it but I would not go as far as to say it was memorable - just a really good thriller to listen to in the car

The One that Got Away

What did you like best about The One That Got Away? What did you like least?

I thought the plot seemed good but was not very original but for a while it kept me listening. Soon got a bit tedious

What was most disappointing about Simon Wood’s story?

I did not like the dog part of this story as am an animal lover. The plot fairly tedious.
I hated the reader's voice.
The author was very pedantic - repeating parts of the story laboriously as if we are idiots. Won't want any more of this author thanks

Did Emily Durante do a good job differentiating each of the characters? How?

Sort of. Her voice was too shrill in some places for me

Was The One That Got Away worth the listening time?

No. Two thirds through I bounced on to the end to get rid of it.

Any additional comments?

Just not for me - sorry.

Nothing exceptional

The girl reading this was a bit too whiney for my liking. The story wasn't great either. All in all it was meh.

It's ok.

It's ok, but not brilliant. The narration became annoying. The female character whiney and the males dopey.

Predictable

The story was predictable but the writer made Zoe a person you want to survive. The narrator was a bit off putting for me. An average book.
