About this listen

A new Kahlan and Richard fantasy novel from bestselling author, Terry Goodkind.

An accident leads to the discovery of a mysterious machine that has rested hidden deep underground for countless millennia. The machine awakens to begin issuing a series of increasingly alarming, if minor, omens. The omens turn out to be astonishingly accurate, and ever more ominous.

As Zedd tries to figure out how to destroy the sinister device, the machine issues a cataclysmic omen involving Richard and Kahlan, foretelling an impending event beyond anyone’s ability to stop. As catastrophe approaches, the machine then reveals that it is within its power to withdraw the omen . . . In exchange for an impossible demand.

Critic reviews

‘Few writers have Goodkind’s power of creation’
Publishing News

‘Goodkind’s greatest triumph: the ability to introduce instantly identifiable characters. His heroes, like us, are not perfect. Instead, each is flawed in ways that strengthen rather than weaken their impact.’

‘A real born storyteller'

Audio Missing half the book

Would you consider the audio edition of The Omen Machine to be better than the print version?

No because there is only half of it

Who was your favorite character and why?

Zed, I dunno why just like him.

Which scene did you most enjoy?

The one where it cuts off

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I cried when I realized it's missing half the chapters

Guys don't buy this until you see it has a run time of more than 8 hours. I've pointed this out to audible but honestly someone has to put a warning up here.

Interesting in the beginning and at the end

The middle of the book gets really dull at places and makes you skip through but overall its a good continuation of the adventures of Richard and Kahlan.

Narrator is good book is terrible

this story is lame. 83 chapters of boring conversations and when it finally gets interesting the story abruptly ends. Better skip this one

THE AUDIOBOOK IS INCOMPLETE

If this book wasn’t for you, who do you think might enjoy it more?

People who enjoy books without endings will love this one. It is exiting up until the point it prematurely stops. Of course, when this reports this to audible they carefully avoid doing anything. This to people might enjoy, at least that is, if they enjoy sending long streams of pointless emails.

What could Terry Goodkind have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

Terry Goodkind could go to some writing classes and perhaps learn how to right un-repetitive prose and three dimensional characters. He could also let half a chapter pass by without feeling the need to explain everything as he goes along. It kills suspense and further points out the weaknesses of the plot (of which there are many).

Would you be willing to try another one of Sam Tsoutsouvas’s performances?

Possibly, his voices isn't entirely offensive but I get the impression his range might be weak. It could be however that he just could not be bothered to try hard with such a sub standard novel.

You didn’t love this book--but did it have any redeeming qualities?

The thing with Terry Goodkind books is that they are astoundingly moorish. I hate every moment listening to them but like some addled drug addict I find myself wiping the literary vomit of my shoes and looking for my next hit.

Any additional comments?

The audio book is incomplete. This can be most clearly seen on amazon where it states that the book contains slightly more pages than its sequel 'The Middle Kingdom' and yet despite that is half the length on audio. As far as I can tell some idiot was lazy while uploading it and forgot to put up the second half. More than that, they then labelled it as the completed work which anyone reading a synopsis of the book can tell its not. Dont buy this book until it appears as at least over 12 hours long. Even then, dont buy this book unless you are already Goodkind hooked or else a moron who gets some perverse delight out of listening to crimes against literature.

Very disappointing

Very sad that after the glorious journey that was The Sword of Truth series (11 books), this feels lifeless. Repetitive prose, disjointed story, two dimensional characters. A great shame.

Only got half the book!

What would have made The Omen Machine better?

Having the missing last 43 chapters

What will your next listen be?

Hopefully the missing 43 chapters

What didn’t you like about Sam Tsoutsouvas’s performance?

Sam performance is fine as always

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

Bit disappointed I only got half the book :-)

Any additional comments?

I'd be most interested to find why the first reviewer gave the book 5 stars across the board when it's obviously incomplete.
