About this listen

Dead Woman's Ditch. The site of a grisly 200-year-old murder - and a recent hit-and-run. When a young woman's body is found at the macabre landmark in Somerset's Quantock Hills, DI Mike Lockyer and Sergeant Jane Bennett are called in to investigate.

They find a community gripped by fear and superstition. The locals won't venture out at night, believing there's a man stalking the hills - a phantom cloaked in folklore and legend, keeping the sinister legacy of Dead Woman's Ditch alive.

Confronted by a hostile CID team and a murder victim with close ties to their own squad, Lockyer and Bennett will have to accept what they can't see before they can find what's really there....

Confused

Several issues with this book!!! The ending of the non historical plot is for me inconclusive. Why was Pippa murdered and what was in the letters????????? What is their relevance???!!!!Unfinished plot. The author uses the same phrase "stretching the word" multiple times!!!!! Finally the use of a male actor to do the main male parts in book 1 was excellent. Sadly the female narrator who carries on solo in subsequent books lets the books down when trying to do male voices esp the main male character.

Slow to get going

Slow to get going but once it did wow!! Great story and narrator was excellent.
One thing that annoyed me was the amount of times “drawing out the word” was said. Hope there’s another one in the series as I’ve enjoyed them all so far

Well worth reading

With a great twist at the end, this book will have you scratching your head. The characters are believable, and well rounded. Each one has a role to play in this great plot, written very well. Brilliantly narrated.

Lockyer and Bennett- book 4

When a young woman's body is found at the macabre landmark, Dead Woman's Ditch, in Somerset's Quantock Hills, DI Mike Lockyer and Sergeant Jane Bennett are called in from South East London to ‘support the local’ investigation.

They find a hostile CID team and a murder victim with close ties to one of their own colleagues.

Lockyer and Bennett find themselves dealing with local superstitious tales and beliefs as well as a growing number of deaths

I love the characters and stories in this series.

Bit disappointed

This is the 4th book I’ve read in the DI Lockyer series but I found this one a bit too far fetched. The repetitive use of the word arse was pointless and unnecessary. Is it a word the author has just discovered perhaps? If so, I hope she forgets it soon.

The Night Stalker

Despite rewinding huge chunks of the book and trying to concentrate harder, I just found this book quite dull. This is a crying shame because Donoghue's previous books have been brilliant. Why on earth would two Met CID officers be sent to Somerset to take over another DI's case? Also, isn't it handy that DS Jane Bennett's parents have also moved to the west country? And as for DI Mike Lockyer's daughter's boyfriend's involvement - that surely would rule him out of any measured investigation?

The plot seemed to ape the various 'Midsomer Murder' plots.

I didn't really like Imogen Church's narration this time - her rendition of the female characters was far too overwrought and drawn out and the male characters seemed bizarre.

It's a no from me. Send Lockyer and Bennett back to Lewisham please.

narrator

mediocre story. I wish a woman wouldn't try to imitate a mans voice. it's distracting.

Loved the book

Good story, well written and charecters you feel you come to know. Read by the excellent voice and characterisation of Imogen Church who as always, brings the story to life.

OKish

Kept going to the bitter end but the twists and turns became over complicated and quite unlikely. The red herring characters were obvious. Sadly, what was a good basic plot was spoiled by an attempt to lead the reader to accept unlikely characters.
