About this listen
They call me the Night Queen, with a heart as dark as the night itself. And as such, I will rule my future kingdom. No light shall ever touch my broken heart again.
On her 20th birthday, the beautiful but arrogant Princess Mina von Rhine crosses the point of no return. Unwilling to be married off to a warmongering Northerner, she defies her father, the mighty King of the Rhine, and ridicules all her potential suitors.
Furious at her appalling behavior, her father vows to give Mina's hand in marriage to the first unmarried man who walks through the palace gates—be it nobleman or beggar. And when an impoverished Northern soldier arrives at the castle the following day, the king stands by his word and offers Mina to him.
This ill-suggested match, however, might prove of use to Mina after all. The Northern soldier doesn’t seem too fond of the marriage himself, so Mina offers the handsome but insufferable warrior enormous riches if he helps her escape into the North.
But the journey through war-torn lands forces the princess to realize that if she can’t melt her frozen heart, marriage might be the least of her concerns.
From the author: This is a beautiful, dark, and romantic reimagining of the long-forgotten German fairy tale King Thrushbeard, which was one of the very first stories to use the enemies to lovers trope. It was first published by the beloved Brothers Grimm (whose works include such classics as Cinderella, Beauty and the Beast, and Rapunzel. The Brothers Grimm invented many modern-day romance tropes). If you’d love to listen to an adult version of a compelling old fairy tale and enjoy romances with sizzling passion, this book is a must-listen.
This is the first book in a series. The second book, Queen of Ashes, will be released in September.

An entertaining adventure
This audiobook was a good surprise. We get to meet Princess Mina, who goes through a significant transformation from a young princess to the badass Night Queen after her mom's sudden death. When her dad decides it's time for her to get hitched and end the never-ending war, Mina, being spoiled and sassy, straight-up disses every potential suitor. But then her dad drops a bombshell and offers her hand to the first guy who walks into their kingdom, no matter who he is. And who shows up? A humble soldier from the North. I was hooked! I can't wait for book two.

an old fairy tale told anew
I love fairy tales and am always happy when these old stories are given a new interpretation. I find it most interesting when lesser-known stories are used, like the fairy tale of King Thrushbeard here.
Princess Mina has her heart firmly closed. When her father wants to marry her off, she does everything to avoid this fate, even to the point of running away.
The narrative style captivated me from the very beginning. The author succeeds in transforming the old fairy tale in a new and exciting way. I particularly liked the creation of the characters, especially Mina is very complex.
The chemistry between Alrick and Mina is right and the emotions are great. There are a few erotic scenes that add to the chemistry between Mina and Alrick.
The open ending increases the anticipation for the next book.
Audio book notes: The audio book is narrated by M.K. Blackwood. Her voice fits the story perfectly. I particularly enjoyed her interpretation of the various characters.
Note: I requested a free copy of the audiobook. I listened to it voluntarily and reviewed it.
