About this listen

In The Name of the Wind, Patrick Rothfuss brings together elements from all the great fantasy writers, from George R. R. Martin to Robert Jordan, to create a thrilling and intricately spun story that will leave you breathless.

I have stolen princesses back from sleeping barrow kings. I burned down the town of Trebon. I have spent the night with Felurian and left with both my sanity and my life. I was expelled from the university at a younger age than most people are allowed in. I tread paths by moonlight that others fear to speak of during day. I have talked to Gods, loved women, and written songs that make the minstrels weep.

My name is Kvothe. You may have heard of me.

So begins the tale of Kvothe - currently known as Kote, the unassuming innkeeper - from his childhood in a troupe of travelling players, through his years spent as a near feral orphan in a crime riddled city, to his daringly brazen yet successful bid to enter a difficult and dangerous school of magic.

In these pages you will come to know Kvothe the notorious magician, the accomplished thief, the masterful musician, the dragon-slayer, the legend hunter, the lover, the thief and the infamous assassin.

The Name of the Wind is fantasy at its very best.

Read by Rupert Degas.

Fantastic

This book is absolutely wonderful and is even worth having to buy the book in two separate parts. It's beautifully written, absorbing, exciting and compulsive listening. It transports you convincingly into another world. One of the very best books I've read or listened to in the last five years. I highly recommend it. The narration is also very good and adds to the story. I can't wait for the next book to become available on audiobook. I love it so much I will buy it in addition to the paperback version.

Excellent

I have read the book and enjoyed it immensely. I was telling a friend about it and she said that she had the audio book and she would let me borrow it...What a disappointment! The narrator was American and I lost interest after about half an hour.

This audio version is how this kind of Fantasy should be narrated...British accents...It had me enchanted from the beginning and I highly recommend it.

Amazing Book !!

What did you like most about The Name of the Wind (Part One)?

This is a hidden gem! The story doesn't progress at pace (just to set expectations) and this first book only covers a term at University.. and this is normally enough for me to put the book down but I'm glad I didn't. Its really well written and you get completely immersed in the story and you know its heading into dark places.

The use of a science/physics type approach to the magical stops it playing into the realms of wizards and the like. Really nice touch to make the fantasy seem all the more real.

It can also be a bit frustrating at times watching Kvothe make his mistakes, just like a normal teenager, as you know its going to slow the story down ...but you get to see the failings that take him on the adventure and reveal the secrets that made into "Kote".

The "Chandrian" or the "The Seven" are the teaser throughout the book that keep you reading, and you know its going to be good when they finally meet and this really kept me hooked through 2 of the books.

My only warning would be that the final book in the trilogy is not out until the end of this year (2013) or early 2014. I've almost finished book 2 (The Wise Man's Fear) and I really don't want to wait for the third instalment.

As good as I remember!

This series is one of the best I've ever read so I wanted to hear it this time! The narrator really is amazing for this story voice fitting the characters.

The story is different than most in the way of layout with interesting character development, lots of hints for future events and a really interesting way to write!

If you listen you'll be able to stitch together small hints at what's gonna happen!

Nothing like Harry Potter

Don't be put off by imbeciles saying it's like Harry Potter just because of a few similarities. It's like comparing a mill to a car because both have wheels. Very different.
I was unsure about the reader as I started, but quickly grew to love him. I generally had the speed set to about 1.3 as normal setting was a little slow.
