About this listen

A captivating fantasy by debut author Anna Hoghton, a young and thrilling new voice for middle-grade listeners.

Aribella lives in Venice, the daughter of an impoverished lace-maker. But she has a deadly secret: when angered, sparks shoot from her fingertips. Unable to keep her power hidden, she flees - but when dark spectres rise from the lagoon, the fire in her hands saves her life. A stranger witnesses the attack - and through him, Aribella leaves her old life behind and discovers the world of the Cannovacci, magical warriors sworn to defeat the strange spectres menacing the city.

An enhanting short fantasy for 10-13 year olds

I got this to screen for my daughter (8) and it's just a little bit too advanced, I reckon she'll get far more out of it in a year or two. As fantasy goes for what I see as the target audience it's pretty good, standard array of magical abilities, I liked the mask aspect to it, decently thought out characters with a strong female lead and the plot is a fine mix of adventure and mystery - it ends a bit too neatly for my tastes but then it's not aimed at middle aged men. One of the better children's books I've read recently, and there's a heap scope for deeper world building.

Narration is fine, I found it to be a bit jilted sometimes with overlong pauses but doesn't ruin it by any stretch. Voicings are consistent and no weird pronunciation I can remember.

Highly recommended, will be keeping the physical copy on the "when you're older" shelf.
