Summary

Another title in the ever popular Agatha Christie series.
The suave and debonair Colonel Race must solve a question, not of ‘accidental death or suicide’, but ‘murder or double murder’.

Pretty, young Anne came to London looking for adventure. In fact, adventure comes looking for her – and finds her immediately at Hyde Park Corner tube station. Anne is present on the platform when a thin man, reeking of mothballs, loses his balance and is electocuted on the rails.

The Scotland Yard verdict is accidental death. But Anne is not satisfied.

After all, who was the man in the brown suit who examined the body? And why did he race off, leaving a cryptic message behind: ‘17-122 Kilmorden Castle’?

Implausible but fun story

The characters were well described, plot full of familiar devices but still entertaining.
I normally like Emilia Fox as a narrator, but this time her reading of the male character was too shouty and harsh, quite hard to listen to.

I loved the mix of romance and mystery in this story.

Which character – as performed by Emilia Fox – was your favourite?

A Truly Ripping Yarn!

Jolly japes in 1924 with feisty heroine Anne Beddingfield racing across the world to solve a murder. This book is full of energy, thrills, spills, romance and fun as well as a good plot and intriguing characters.

However… Emilia Fox tips it into the realms of a swashbuckling comic, losing any real sense of danger which a subtler narrator would have kept. She’s a good actress so it’s a shame and took me several mis-starts before I could surrender to that style and get into it. Mind you, as every male character sounded like someone from a children’s book, it was hard to take seriously. Agatha Christie may not be modern but her ethos is still current and it’s demeaning when her work is placed into a quaint bubble by bad production. She’s the world’s favourite author for a reason! Let’s have more recordings of her books with different styles to keep everyone happy, not just cartoon fans.

Would be better with a different narrator

Unfortunately the narration of the male voices really lets this story down. Get Dan Stevens to do it next time- he’s great reading Agatha Christie
