About this listen
A thrilling new crime series by the best-selling author of Death and Croissants
A Killer. A Saint. A Town Full of Whispers
When an English expat is brutally murdered, his charred corpse left on a Loire Valley hillside, the police turn to juge d’instruction Matthieu Lombard to find the perpetrator.
Instead, Lombard discovers a wealth of secrets, grudges, and feuds in the idyllic town of Saint-Genèse-sur-Loire. He begins to suspect that the remaining members of the Comité des Fêtes know more about the death than they are letting on.
But rather than leading to an arrest, each clue he uncovers seems to point in one, unexpected direction: Joan of Arc. Is the answer to the murder hiding in the barroom gossip of the Lion d’Or? Or in another century altogether?
The thrilling new crime series from The Times-bestselling author of Death and Croissants.

An engaging crime mystery
An interesting premise, setting a murder mystery in France where the police investigation proceeds quite differently from the familiar practice in the UK and US. A pity that the author failed to acknowledge the parallels with the system in Scotland.
An interesting set of crimes, with a decent cast of characters and a good location, and a nice resolution. Excellent work by the narrator, barring a mispronunciation of the English name "St John" as "Saint John" rather than the normal "Sinjen" (made into a joke by Rowan Atkinson's priest character in the film "Four Weddings and a Funeral").
The tension between the police and the magistrate is perfectly plausible, especially given the latter's preference for active involvement in the investigation.
Minor niggles...A couple of places where the author appears to have forgotten the characters in his book were talking in French, as they made a play on words which may only work in English. Not entirely convinced by Juge Lombard's long-standing angst about his late wife, given that the French are known to typically have a relaxed attitude about it.

Excellent,
A strong, enjoyably twisty plot, beautifully written with well-rounded, believable characters.
Very different from Moore's "Death&Croissants" series, which I also love. This has less levity and more shadow, but the shadows are very much worth exploring.
The audio is well done. Fits the mood and pace of the book.
Would recommend.

visited the area described in the story so this added another lever. I enjoy French police/detective stories full stop.

Different from previous, but excellent
A darker character in the Judge, but really enjoyed his storytelling. Looking forward to the next instalment.

Not a fan
This book was a bit like Midsomer Murders set in France; too many characters muddled the plot, made it difficult to follow. Basically it was a good story but it didn’t quite work for me.
