About this listen

Rev. Fitzmyer demonstrates that how Luke was interested in prayer, worship, and the power of the Holy Spirit in the salvation of the individual and the formation of the Church. Fr. Fitzmyer defends the traditional identity of Luke and his relationship with Paul. The situation of the believing community today in the 21st century is just as complex as in the first century.

Somewhat chaotic but worth listening to

Joseph Fitzmyer was one of the greats of modern New Testament study, known particularly for his work on Luke-Acts. He contributed several volumes to the excellent Anchor-Yale Bible commentary. This recording was evidently made during a one-day seminar on Luke, and has all the frisson and problems of a live lecture. While Fitzmyer was an excellent scholar, his presentation in these lectures is pretty chaotic. He sometimes speaks in sentence fragments, and sometimes rushes over important material. Where he does speak in full sentences, it is clearly from his written notes. Despite these caveats, the lectures are worth listening to. You are bound to learn something valuable. Fitzmyer touches on many important issues in New Testament studies, sometimes only in asides. Now, if Audible were to record some of the published work of Fitzmyer, that would be really something...
