Summary

After the coldest night of the year, they find the man's body. He is dangling from the Hanging Tree on the outskirts of a village near Lydmouth, with his trousers round his ankles. Is it suicide, murder, or accidental death resulting from some bizarre sexual practice?
Journalist Jill Francis and Detective Inspector Thornhill become involved in the case in separate ways. Jill is also drawn unwillingly into the affairs of the small public school where the dead man taught. Meanwhile a Peeping Tom is preying upon Lydmouth; Jill has just moved into her own house and is afraid she is being watched. And there are more distractions, on a personal level, for policeman and reporter....

Yes - allowances must be made for when the books are set in terms of our modern expectations - but the story, plot and characters are very believable.

Good period atmosphere and clever storyline
The period details on this are interesting but not laboured. The plot line is intriguing and shows attitudes from the 50s very well. A good listen with voices authentic and consistent.

A gentle who dunnit
Love Andrew Taylor 's historical books but not sure about the gentle pace of the Lydmouth series. Although they were set just after the war (2) so would be different to today's crime stories but I will read them all. Very good use of words and Philip Frank's reading and voices are very clever which brings the stories to life. Then he lit another cigarette!

Another great, unique story
Another really different storyline from this brilliant author. Once again I had too listen in one sitting because it was so riveting. Wonderfully performed by Philip Frank's. A brilliant partnership for these stories.

This series is getting better and better, the twist are like hairpin bends, magic, I have found the character's easy to visualise and understand. Superb listen roll on no 4

The Title
having listened to the previous reads I was interested tosee how the relationships developed, it was rather predictable, still I enjoyed most of it.
