1918. With the country they once ruled turned against them, the future of the Romanov family hangs in the balance. When middle daughter Maria captures the attention of two of the guards, it will lead to the ultimate choice between right and wrong....

Fifty-five years later...

Val rushes to her father's side when she hears of his troubling end-of-life confession: 'I didn't want to kill her'. As she unravels the secrets behind her mother's disappearance when she was 12 years old, she finds herself caught up in one of the world's greatest mysteries.

Not her best

I will first of say, I have loved all Gill Pauls books. I love the fact that she bases the plot on facts. However, I found this story was spoilt by the narrator using the wrong accents for Russian people. When I first started listening I thought the first soldier was from Liverpool with his scouse accent. But then some one else came along with an Irish accent then a Yorkshire accent. It just didn’t sound right. The overall story was great and did keep me on tender hooks wondering how things were going to turn out.
As previously Gill will use two story lines of past and present and bring them together at the end. This one I did feel was a bit far fetched and spoilt the ending. I still love her books though and will be the first the listen to her next one.

FAB U LUSSSSSS

As with Gill’s other books - the research is fantastic - you will absolutely love this book, especially if you like history. I love how she brings past and present to a crescendo at the end. Wonderful! The narrator was fab! Just off to find other books narrated by her and other books written by Gill Paul.

Wrong accents

I've loved all the books I've read by this author before but I'm really put off right out of the gate by the Russian soldier having a Scouse accent, which then turned into a Yorkshire accent! I'll persevere if I can but if he's too much of the story with that accent I don't think I can. What a shame.
