About this listen
This is a story from The Casebook of Sherlock Holmes, Volume II collection.
In the last six stories written by Conan Doyle featuring Sherlock Holmes and Dr Watson, the duo face some of their most challenging cases. In "The Adventure of the Illustrious Client", Holmes puts his own life in danger as he tries to cut short a young girl’s infatuation with the notorious wife-murderer Baron Gruner. Why is Mrs. Maberley offered a handsome price for the Three Gables, provided she leaves at once and takes nothing with her? Even in his retirement, Holmes’s skills are called upon, as he follows a trail of death on the Sussex coast in "The Adventure of the Lion’s Mane".

Arthur Conan Doyle’s "The Adventure of the Lion’s Mane" is one of only two Sherlock Holmes stories narrated by the man himself, rather than his companion John Watson. This particular case takes place in Holmes’ retirement, and involves the murder of a local prep school teacher, differing somewhat in tone and pacing from many of Doyle’s 56 Sherlock Holmes stories, perhaps due to the illustrious detective’s more sedate lifestyle during the period in question.
David Timson brings his characteristic zeal to this performance, his rich, dramatic tones well-suited to this enthralling whodunit. Timson is a meticulous and highly enthusiastic narrator who enlivens Doyle’s text, and the character of Holmes himself, with his thoughtful attention to detail.
