About this listen

The second and most widely known in the series of the classic fantasy tales – The Chronicles of Narnia. Read by the unforgettable Sir Michael Hordern.

“This is the land of Narnia,” said the Faun, “where we are now. And you – you have come from the wild woods of the west?”
“I – I got in through the wardrobe in the spare room,” said Lucy.

Lucy steps into the Professor’s wardrobe – but steps out again into a snowy forest. She’s stumbled upon the magical world of Narnia, land of unicorns, centaurs, fauns… and the wicked White Witch, who terrorises all. Lucy soon realises that Narnia, and in particular Aslan, the great Lion, needs her help if the country’s creatures are ever going to be free again…

The best narration of the lion this witch

The music composed for this audio book is wonderful and the narration is equally as good. I loved it.

wonderful story marvellously told

Sir Michael's narration of this story is as matchless as the story itself.
It is of course a little dated, and some explanation eg of deformity and ugliness may require explanation to younger listeners.

Abridged

This is abridged, nothing in the title or description says it is abridged. The performance is good but this should be clearly labelled.

A firm favourite wondefully performed!

I can't remember if I first saw the Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe cartoon first or read the book first as a child. However it was a firm favourite, if not my most favourite story as a child. This was back in the day before home video etc, so when your best loved cartoons or movies came on terrestrial TV, it was a real treat. I read the book multiple timed, purchased the VHS cartoon when we eventually got one and of course had to have the cassette tape story read by the legendary Michael Hordern.

I probably still have the cassette tapes somewhere! However, since the pandemic and working at home 4 days out of 5, I now listen to music and audio books to get me by. When this version of the book became available on audible I had to have it. I have listened to it multiple times now and for me it captures the very spirit of the authors work.

Michael Hordern is great at telling the story and performing the characters without varying his voice too much. He has one of those voices you could listen to for hours....and I do!

The mostly harp music by Marrisa Robles again captures the mood and emotions and sets the scenes perfectly. You've got to love the harp as an instrument.

If you're in any doubt as to whether to purchase this version of the audio book, I would highly recommend it. You won't be disappointed.

Lovely

This is now my favourite version of this book :) Michael Hordon's narration makes this old favourite even more delightful.

I was wary of purchasing this because of the comments about the music, but while I can see how some might find it jarring I felt it added to the atmosphere rather than detracted.

great book but it is read very fast and the background music is very loud. should have a way to quieten the background music.

Beautiful and nostalgic

If you didn’t grow up with this audio version of the book, then I guess it’s impossible to understand the cosy, enchanted feeling it elicits. The music is haunting and magical, the storytelling performance is gripping and compelling. I’m so glad I’ve found this and can welcome it back into my life. Perfect for a winter’s evening listening

Perfect for children

I loved this story as a child to listen to on long car journeys, or to help me fall asleep with adventurous dreams.. Having come back it as a young adult for a bit of nostalgia I find I just as enthralling and well executed as ever.

Revisiting a childhood classic

Loved the narration and storytelling, took me back to a simpler time reading this classic by C S Lewis for the first time as a child, the jaunty tunes playing throughout took some getting used to but added a charm to the performance in the end, Thank you!
