Summary
Mordecai has discovered his heritage and must take up the mantle of a lord of the realm, while figuring out what it really means to be a mage of the line of Illeniel.
He is beset on both sides by allies and enemies trying to control or destroy his future. Gods and kings both seek to manipulate him for their own ends, and no matter what he chooses his loved ones will suffer. Will he risk destroying his love with a bond that might be her death, or face the madness that comes to wizards who embrace power without restraint?

Utterly brilliant
Mr Manning has produced a series of pure genius. If you like Tolkien, Martin, Mancour or Jordan’s epic saga’s you are sure to enjoy this. The characters have depth and the narrative is sublime. It has laughter and sorrow in equal measure and some hidden gems of “how will he get out of this one”. I started out listening to Thornbear and was captivated. I particularly love Alex Wyndhams narration, the voice and what it brings to the characters is key for me.

First book was great, this one is Incredible
Now I know why some people complain about Art of the Adept. If THIS is the sort of stuff Manning wrote before it then I can absolutely understand the complaints now.
After book 2 I've come to the conclusion that Mageborn is nothing short of an incredible fantasy series. It's not perfect, there are certain moments where I did have my hesitations about the direction the story was going but moments like that are short lived.
I suppose that's one of the strengths of writing books that aren't 20+ hours long, the parts that drag a bit won't drag for long. You get past those moments fast and what happens outside of them is nothing short of brilliant.
There are very few audiobooks that have gotten 5/5 from me but this is one of them, I only hope that rest of the series, followed by Embers and Champions series keep up this standard of writing.
