Summary
London, 1964
Psychopathic gangster Ronnie Kray has a “list” of persons who have “taken liberties” and who are to be disposed of, and now barrister Charles Holborne finds his name at the top of the list. He can’t spend his life looking over his shoulder, but how to take the fight to the two most violent gangsters in London?
There seems no obvious danger in taking the murder brief that good fortune lands on his desk. But the accused is the Lighterman...a man with whom Charles has history....
“An excellent thriller, with the Kray twins providing a palpable sense of menace in the background, great action on the river and some gripping courtroom drama.” (Crime Review)
“There is a hint of John le Carré in this tough legal thriller that packs a punch as the reader is swept along towards a fascinating conclusion.” (Dorset Book Detective)
“Vivid, gripping and authentic storytelling...Simon Michael’s best thriller yet.” (Robert Daws)
"One of the key attractions of Simon's Charles Holborne series is the depiction of London, in all it gangland glamour and swinging 60s glory. He brings the past back to life across a beautifully rendered 60s landscape, and delivers a thrilling piece of thriller fiction that will excite any fan of the genre." (Book2Book)

More interesting period legal intrigue
Another enjoyable episode in the life of barrister Charles Holbourne set in the dodgy underworld of 1960s London. We get a glimpse into Charles’ early life working on river barges and involvement with the notorious Krays. Enjoyable, and I’m looking forward to the next one 👍

The more I read the more I like
Simon Michael has constructed such well rounded characters, he obviously knows so well. This is a good story - just the right amount of jargon to make it plausible. I’ll be getting the next instalment. Very well narrated by the author and it tells as he reads each character with their distinctive personalities.

I am hooked
I really enjoyed this book although not Jewish I was bought up with bagels and Matzah on a Sunday from Grodzinski i had Jewish friends and my parents worked for Jews. I can relate to the sixties and this I find makes these books very enjoyable for me. Plan to read the whole series brilliant listen

have you on the edge of your seat
Charles Holbourne the super barrister strikes again, and this time against the Krays! great story, set in an interesting time in London.
Simons writing strikes the right level of detail for me, setting the scene perfectly, whilst not slowing down the story.

Different narrator
Just loved this book number three in the series but I have to say the narrator in this was not as good in book two! Book two impelled me to buy book three but I was a bit disappointing ,so hopefully number for will have Colin Mace back.
