About this listen

A BBC 2 Between the Covers Book Club Pick

James is 34 and fed up. His six-year relationship with Adam has imploded, he hates his job making up celebrity gossip, and his best friend Bella has just announced she's moving to Russia.

Adrift and single in loved-up London, James needs to break out of his lonely, drunken comfort zone. Encouraged by Bella, he throws himself headlong into online dating, blogging each encounter anonymously as the mysterious Romeo.

After meeting a succession of hot/weird/gross men, James has fans and the validation he's always craved. But when his wild night with a closeted Olympian goes viral and sends his Twitter-fame through the roof, James realises maybe, in the search for happy-ever-after, some things are better left un-shared. Seriously, wherefore art thou Romeo....

From Justin Myers, author of sensational blog The Guyliner, this razor-sharp and cringingly candid account of one man's quest for 'The One' is as sad, fearless and funny as dating itself.

brilliantly told and honest

a great story of half truths, based semi autobiographically on Justin's own experiences as a journalist. He is honest and open about the dating game and how he manipulated situations sometimes with very unforeseen consequences. would recommend.

Struggled a bit with how awful everyone was, but enjoyed it otherwise. Joe's an exceptional narrator.

Pre read rating : 9 ( its about internet dating! ) Post read rating : I need closure... A rollercoaster of emotions!!!

Be prepared for a roller coaster of emotions!!! If I spoil though I have tired not to I apologise!!!! But this book has left me so flabbergasted that it must say quite a lot about the story.

The story reels you in immediately. I laughed!!!!I cried!!!!!! I sweared out loud angrily!!! My heart is now battered and confused at the end of the story. Like the many amounts of reviews I have seen online at goodreads and I agree with the sentiments, this book hits far too close to reality. I loved James and his colourful bands of close friends and the hilarious narration of his dates. But Jesus christ the angst and the lows that life sometimes deals you with. Half the time I was in cloud nine then the next minute I was brutally pulled down smack on the ground out of nowhere!! There were many times when I was wishing give my lovely mc a BREAK already!!! My poor heart was confused whether to be angry, sad or happy! Its a whirlwind of an emotion read. Granted I maybe a tad sensitive and cry easily, this book is not easy on the emotions. And the ending did not leave me satisfied at all!! It both angers me as I did not get a closure but I am happy with hopeful imagination for an immediate sequel to follow perhaps?
For a debut book I would say its a home run for Myers. There’s no doubt he is a fabulous writer and has a way with words. It just had far too much realism for my liking tbh! ;)) You see what i did there? But given his journalism background i’m not surprised of his narration style. And a dose of reality is a breath of fresh air i suppose.

And the narrative performance has been good overall. I will need to hear more to make a sound judgment but Jameson made the book an enjoyable listen. If my wishful thinking is correct I hope this partnership carries on to a Bridget Jones scenario and future books are already in plan.

Why?

Because I want closure! I need The Last Romeo!!

Now I am off to read a cheesy Mils & Boons romance to sedate my emotionally wrecked heart!

A funny, sensitive novel on dating in 21st century

I have always enjoyed the ‘Guyliner’s’ blogs and was intrigued to find out how his writing would translate to novel form. He hasn’t disappointed. I found the story an insightful look into world of online dating and laugh out loud funny in places. It’s also a total page turner!

Beautiful, funny story

This was such a great read.

It is lighthearted, fun and emotional in places.

I loved following James/Romeo on his question to find the One. Loved listening to all the disastrous dates. I found myself really routing for James to find his one and only.

I have to say that this book did not end as I had anticipated but, I did love the ending.

I think Joe Jameson did a fabulous job on the narration. He seems to have an amazing way of making you forget you are listening to just one narrator.

Overall it is a beautiful story and I loved it.

Beautiful story and narration

I’m listening to this audiobook for the second time because I didn’t expect “the one” would be the man of which I didn’t remember anything! The narration is amazing, perfect, even though Joe Jameson’s voice sounds too young for the main character who is a 34 years old.

Self enlightenment through alcohol

The road to enlightenment is found through copious amounts of booze and all the bad decisions a blogger can muster. I found the premise of the story interesting if only to see the pitfalls laying ahead of the narrator. Joe Jameson brings a full cast to life, even making me care what happens to Romeo at times. Overall I'm not the target audience of this book, being too old and cynical to relate.

A fabulously witty and fun read

I cannot recommend this book enough. It is witty engaging and insightful. The reader also brings this to life so well and really gets the characters. A superb listen.
