In the last and most complex of the Barsetshire audiobooks, many of Trollope's best-loved characters appear, but the mood of the recording is darker and more uneasy than in earlier volumes.
At the heart of the audiobook is the penniless Reverend Josiah Crawley, first encountered in Framley Parsonage, who in the opening of the story is accused of theft, creating a public scandal that threatens to tear the community apart. As well as this central mystery we find Johnny Eames attempting to woo Lily Dale and the now grown-up Major Henry Grantly falling in love with Reverend Crawley's daughter, Grace, against the wishes of his father, the Archdeacon. The Bishop Proudie and his formidable wife also receive their most dramatic portrayal with Mrs. Proudie finally meeting her match.
This final volume manages to resolve many threads started in the first volume and is a fitting conclusion to the series.
The Last Chronicle of Barset is considered by many, including Trollope himself, to be his best work. A prolific and respected novelist of the 19th-century he created 47 novels and many short stories that have continued to be popular and well-loved.
Narrator Biography
Timothy West is prolific in film, television, theatre, and audiobooks. He has narrated a number of Anthony Trollope's classic audiobooks, including the six Chronicles of Barsetshire and the Palliser series. He has also narrated volumes of Simon Schama's A History of Britain and John Mortimer's Rumpole on Trial.
West's theatre roles include King Lear, The Vote, Uncle Vanya, A Number, Quarter, and Coriolanus and his films include Ever After, Joan Of Arc, Endgame, Iris and The Day of the Jackal. On television, Timothy has held the regular role of Stan Carter on EastEnders (BBC), as well as appearing in Broken Biscuits (BBC), three series of Great Canal Journeys, Last Tango in Halifax; Bleak House, Bedtime and Brass.

Timothy West is brilliant
I enjoyed listening to every sentence. This book brings all the previous Chronicles together. Timothy West's characterisation in all the Chronicles is extraordinary, there's no doubt as to each one of the many characters.

A wonderful conclusion
This was a perfect final book. It follows the characters from most of the preceding books and takes their stories to conclusion. There is love aplenty, goodbyes, comeuppances, justice and humanity.
Far better than the previous two books, this is probably my favourite.
Timothy West deserves an audiobook Oscar for his wonderful characterisations of the many inhabitants of Barchester. It is hard to believe the same person voiced them all. Bravo!

Wonderful Timothy West Steers Us Home
The Last Chronicle is the darkest of the series and the narration of Timothy West gets the listener through the trickier parts. The Reverend Josiah Crawley, the perpetual curate of Hogglestock, stands accused of stealing a cheque and so the story continues. It is a wonderful insight into the life of those times but what overrides the social mores is the characters are timeless and we've all met many of them.

Old favourite enjoyed anew
A fabulous reading of a novel I first read many years ago. The narrator has just the right touch for all the characters and made a long book feel effortless.

very well read by Timothy West, faultlessly conveying the range of characters from Humble to Crawley, and the sweetness of Mr Harding.

Marvellous!
I have adored listening to all six of the Chronicles of Barsetshire.
Trollope has involved me personally the lives of all of all his characters - magically, it feels. How did he do it? There’s so much warmth, sympathy and understanding for our lives and our human weaknesses.
And Timothy West… how could I ever describe the sheer joy I got from every second of his hugely intelligent and talented reading. He maintained with stupendous skill the variations for all those characters’ voices throughout the six novels. Poor Bishop - I especially loved this characterisation.
I will only ever accept Timothy West reading Trollope: I so rarely comes across perfection that it’s an honour to have had access to it here.
