About this listen
In May of 2007, in a small, quiet town in the South Moravia region of the Czech Republic, a technical glitch - a simple, accidental crossing of signals - revealed a terrible case of child abuse, and an entire nation watched transfixed with horror as the grisly extent of the perversion of the maternal instinct was revealed. Two small brothers named Jakub and Ondrej, nine and seven years old respectively, were revealed to have suffered confinement, mutilation, psychological brutality, and cannibalism at the hands of several people - foremost among them their own mother and her sister.
The ensuing investigation and trial captivated the country as a web of secrecy and manipulation was laid bare. That entire nation's attention was transfixed as the disappearance of a teenage girl revealed a daring case of concealed identity and international intrigue, culminating in a 1,000-mile chase in the depths of a Scandinavian winter.
The allegations that were levelled would keep any parent of a young child awake at night. A secretive cult operating in close proximity to children: stealing, forging medical records, and possibly attempting to create a new messiah were in full swing. All the while its members appeared, on the surface, to be models of excellent caregivers.
This is the story of the infamous Kuřim Case, an investigation that engrossed the public and media of a whole country for two years. It is a story of intense cruelty and sadism, inflicted on the most vulnerable members of society.
If you are especially sensitive to accounts of the suffering of children, you may find it advisable not to listen any farther.
If, however, you seek to understand the darker side of human nature by coming face to face with it, then this audiobook is for you.

Shocking
Not for the faint hearted. This book is well written and Ryan Green gives a good account of how a loving mother can be manipulated into harming her children and what these children had to suffer at the hands of those who were living in the same house.
It also contains snippets of other children's stories, who died or were harmed by those who should have taken care of them.
It also tells of how the children were treated by the authorities after they were discovered and how the courts of the land deal with the perpetrators of these crimes.
Was Barbara a victim or a master manipulator?
I believe the latter.

A Short one
I am always drawn to Ryan Green stories and this was an interesting one. It was short, but it is a singular case after all. This is the first time I've listened to Ernie as a narrator and he did a wonderful job, it was engaging and interesting as he lead us down this tale.

still puzzled as to how they called it a cult ?

Sad and Shocking.
I received this audiobook free in exchange for this review.
If you have an interest in true crime, this book is definitely for you.
Right from the beginning the narrator draws you in and holds your attention throughout this shocking true-crime tale. Although at times I did find this book to be a little fast-paced in places and I had to go back and re-listen to some parts. The book does cover a lot of information about the case, however, because this is such a complex crime I did think some of the details were missing. It would have worked well to be a little longer.
All in all the book is interesting, especially if you just want an overview of this tale.

Well written, Well read!
As always, I loved this true crime by Ryan Green! It's an earlier book, the first I"ve heard narrated by Ernie Sprance, and I was very impressed. Ryan researches his material well, which is obvious from the indepth description of what happened to both the victims and the protagonists in all his books.
This one is particularly chilling. Why? Normally we are led down a narrative of head injuries in childhood, abuse, SOMETHING to explain why someone turns into a hardened rapist /murderer / torturer. This time? Nope. Just some sick individuals bent on torturing little boys. Whether some were manipulated, whether an evil cult really had more to do with it, who can say? Listen and find out!
One is left reminiscent about the movie "Orphan" however!!
Again, the story is very easy to listen to, more like a novel, except heartbreakingly, it is real!
Going to start the next in line straight away!!!!!

A shocking look at this true crime case
I have to admit that before I read/ listened to this book I had never heard of this case. At times it is not an easy read as it deals with the abuse of children. The length of the novel is brilliant as it can be listened to within one sitting. My only down point is that at times it became a little confusing as it jumped from person to person but I am do glad that I persevered. I was given this book by the author/narrator in return for an honest and unbiased review
