About this listen
Brought to you by Penguin.
When gambler and failed magician Valen Quinol is given the opportunity to play in the Forbearance Game—the invitation-only game where players gamble with secrets—he can't resist. Or refuse, as it turns out....
Wedged between the empires of Cadogna and L'Ombre, tiny Valtiffe holds on tightly to its independence—and to the opportunities for trade, politics and smuggling it offers. But powerful forces are bearing down on the island nation, and soon Valen and his misfit crew are caught up in a game where the fates of whole countries are at stake, and lives are as easily discarded as playing cards.

Good concept worth trying
This is perhaps one of those books that's better read than listened to, particularly as the book has maps and so forth to contextualise names and places.
The story itself is interesting enough and while it's quite slow paced, that's no bad thing. I'd have liked more character development and for things to have been fleshed out more. In fact it suffers from not being long enough which is rare in fantasy. But it was well written and I very much enjoyed how the games are weaved into the world, as well as all the detail the author has gone into with them.
The thing that really lets this down isn't the narration so much as the production. There are long pauses in the narration, audible breaths, obvious points where 2 clips have been clipped together, and so on. It's a real shame as it takes away from what is otherwise an enjoyable listen.
