About this listen

"IRRESISTIBLE AND PULSE-POUNDING" Karin Slaughter
"A TENSE, PACY PAGE-TURNER" GUARDIAN
"BRILLIANT AND RELENTLESS" Don Winslow

The unmissable new thriller from the bestselling author of THE CHAIN.

YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT YOU'RE CAPABLE OF UNTIL THEY COME FOR YOUR FAMILY.

After moving from a small country town to Seattle, Heather Baxter marries Tom, a widowed doctor with a young son and teenage daughter. A working vacation overseas seems like the perfect way to bring the new family together, but once they're deep in the Australian outback, the jet-lagged and exhausted kids are so over their new mom.

When they discover a remote Dutch Island, off-limits to outside visitors, the family talks their way onto the ferry, taking a chance on an adventure far from the reach of iPhones and Instagram. But as soon as they set foot on the island, which is run by a tightly knit clan of locals, everything feels wrong. Then a shocking accident propels the Baxters from an unsettling situation into an absolute nightmare.

When Heather and the kids are separated from Tom, they are forced to escape alone, seconds ahead of their pursuers. Now it's up to Heather to save herself and the kids, even though they don't trust her, the harsh bushland is filled with danger, and the locals want her dead.

Heather has been underestimated her entire life, but she knows that only she can bring her family home again and become the mother the children desperately need, even if it means doing the unthinkable to keep them all alive.

Enjoyable

I enjoyed this book, there were bits of it though that reminded me of a programme called The A Team, readers of a certain age demographic will know what I’m talking about

Accents shocking, great story.

The story was really exciting and kept me up late. The narration wasn’t great and the Australian and Irish accents were terrible 😂 after a while though I didn’t care as the story had me gripped.

Gained momentum

I thought the Sean Duffy novels (also by McKinty) were brilliant, though the narrator contributed significantly to this view. I didn’t really like the narration of The Island and thought I’d be returning this after a little while. However, the story is actually pretty good and started to get quite exciting after the initial incident (which felt avoidable). If you like the narrator, this will really do it for you. I merely enjoyed it.

Is the pronunciation of Irish names that hard to get right?

The story is a good. You’ll want to keep listening. The narration, however, although well paced and competently delivered, has serious issues. The accents are not good. If you can’t do them convincingly, then don’t do them! The real problem for me though is the pronunciation of Irish names. This is pretty basic. And complete mis-pronunciation shouldn’t have been approved. Niamh is not pronounced “Nee-am”!!

Island review

I’m always a little concerned if a book has too much hype prior to release . A good ( albeit basic ) story . The narrator was a little distracting with awful Australian / Irish accent and pronunciation - must do better

Jeez - great story murdered by the narration

I'm a big A McK fan. I love his writing and style, but as with the Sgt. Sean Duffy canon, his work here has once again been slaughtered in cold blood by some dreadful and diabolical narration.

Surely there are competent voice actors who can carry off an NI accent (Duffy) and Australian, Irish and again NI accents (The Island)?

The depiction of Rory, the former RUC man from Ballymena, is utterly mesmerising in its shockingly gruesome and grizzly inaccuracy. At that point I could have cried for poor Adrian. Were I in his shoes I'd be totally miffed and contemplating some kind of an injunction. :-)

Still, there's always the movie.

shame about the narration

loved listening to Gérard Doyle reading previous books , but narration here was poor . The Irish connection was somewhat lost due to the terrible accents , and Australian ones worse! I can't really believe this was approved! Especially with the Authors level of success. Anyway , the story was pretty good , but much more of a violent thriller than his earlier books.
