Summary
Set in the Northeast of England, these are dark, dangerous, and witty tales of a close-knit community. Here, neighbours have sharp tongues, suspicious minds, and hidden talents. This a place where money doesn't grow on trees and where women and girls endure a damn sight more than anyone should have to. But kindness can still come from unexpected quarters...
Critic reviews
"No matter their gender, the voices of Swinney's characters are captured with a fine ear, alert to the comic, whether intentional or not, of Viz at its richest and best. If her dialogue has the feel of conversations eavesdropped, then her prose has the knack of crocheting complexity with apparent simplicity, line by line, until the reader is able to see the fully worked intricacy of the pattern. It's a collection whose many seams are as abundant with gold as they are of coal." (Northern Soul, Desmond Bullen Reviews)

A gem
Janet Swinney’s latest collection of short stories, “The House with Two Letter-Boxes”, is a gem.
These tales, set in the Northeast of England, are the result of the author’s amazing sense of observation. A weave of dialogues and keenly-observed details take us to a dangerous world where – as in real life –comedy and darkness meet, and kindness is found in unexpected corners.
Hannah Wood’s bright yet unobtrusive reading style is perfect. She moves smoothly between the narrative and the dialogues, and it all rings true.
