About this listen

The latest instalment of the irresistibly charming, perennially best-selling No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency series.

Precious Ramotswe has always idolised her father, the late Obed Ramotswe. She feels that she knows all about his life - but does she? Sometimes our parents surprise us, and we discover that things were not quite what we thought them to be. And the same goes for Mma Makutsi, Mma Ramotswe's feisty assistant, who also makes certain discoveries about her own past that cause some surprise.

The placid world of the No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency is further disturbed by the arrival in Gaborone of somebody whom Mma Ramotswe - and Mr JLB Matekoni, for that matter - definitely do not want to see. Of course calm eventually prevails - as it always does in the timeless world of these remarkable ladies.

Fans around the world adore the No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency and its proprietor, Precious Ramotswe, Botswana's premier lady detective. In this delightful series, Mma Ramotswe - with help from her loyal codirector, Mma Makutsi - navigates her cases and her personal life with wisdom, good humour and the occasional cup of tea.

Fantastic story, fantastic narration, mic issues.

Brilliant story with great twists and humorous asides, as good as any in this great series.

For some reason Andoah seems to be lisping heavily in this production and since she doesn't usually lisp it would seem that she has either been given a dodgy mike or spent a night in the Kalahari and got bit on the tongue by a desert fly. The sound system is not doing this marvellous voice any favours and I hope that next time the technical guys (or ladies, Mma) take a bit more care, as I cannot give the usual 97% to this recording.

one of the best- how does he do it?

I finished this book in about 4 days, which is going some as I usually only listen at night. I think this is the first I have really cried at, it was beautiful and veey emotional. One of my favourites of the whole series.

Another great story

I love the slowness of these stories and this one had more than a few plot lines. All very enjoyable. It makes me think I can feel the heat of Botswana

Another bite of Precious Ramotswe's school of life

As usual with this pleasant series, one relaxes into the pace of life in Bostwana. Sit back and enjoy Ma Romatswe's philosophical view of everything from cars to errant men and much more. A good read with excellent narration though perhaps not one of the most engaging stories from the No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency.

Another gem.

Another gentle, entertaining mystery from Botswana. All our usual characters are there, dealing with everyday life and the occasional perplexing situation that must be resolved so everyone can go back to living on the edge of the Kalahari desert. A place where good manners and traditions still matter. I can always rely on Alexander McColl smith to create a calming book full of so much atmosphere and respect for Botswana and it’s people, a mystery but with a high feel good factor. I feel so charmed by the way he writes of this country that I fully intend to visit it. I’m just sorry I won’t be meeting the characters from this series of books there, or perhaps they will be there but with different names!

A good listen

I really enjoyed this story and the way it was read. Occasionally the rolling of the r’s where a little annoying but not enough to ruin the story.

sunshine of Africa

After another gentle session being dropped into the sunshine of Botswana this gentle soap opera moves into the world of corporate greed.
