Summary

Summer 1924: on the night of a glittering society party by the lake of a grand English country house, a young poet takes his life. The only witnesses are sisters Hannah and Emmeline Hartford, and they will never speak to each other again. Winter 1999: Grace Bradley, 98, one-time housemaid of Riverton Manor, is visited by a young director making a film about the poet’s suicide. Ghosts awaken and memories, long consigned to the dark reaches of Grace’s mind, begin to sneak back through the cracks. A shocking secret threatens to emerge – something history has forgotten but Grace never could. Set as the Edwardian summer finally surrenders to the decadent twenties, The House at Riverton is a multi-million-copy bestselling novel and one of the most successful debuts of all time.

Lovely yarn

An enjoyable tale of love and loss. Some fabulous descriptions and likeable characters who have to survive their lives in very challenging times. Grace is an excellent storyteller who keeps you enthralled. In the unfolding tale. Narration is just gorgeous and the ending was a surprise.

Loved it

A wonderful story and beautifully written. There is a lot of detail that didn't technically need to be included, but I personally enjoyed all the embellishment. I was very invested in the characters and their tragic tales.

Wow! What an incredible story!

Such fascinating history and wonderful descriptions of the lives of people and their social class at the beginning of the 20th century. How times have changed! I loved every minute of this brilliant novel. Beautifully read by Emilia Fox.

A lovely 1920 family saga

I really enjoyed this book. I personally love a longer book to listen to and Emila Fox did a wonderful narration of this novel.

Captivating book!

This book had me gripped from the beginning. I enjoyed the story told through the main character looking back over her life. It was a bit of Upstairs/Downstairs and Downton Abbey. Great characters, great story of love and loss, and great narration, 20 hours of great listening. I could easily listen to it again and I don't often say that about books!

Downton Abbey for the ears

I enjoyed this book, especially the last couple of hours when things were revealed. If you like a book that ambles along with secrets and the hierarchy of the family and their staff, then this is for you. It's not a fast paced edge-of-your-seat story, but is still a good listen that kept me interested. I did keep speeding it up though, and listened to the last half at speed x1.7!

Great narration

Really enjoyed the beginning of this book, but found the ending disappointing and somewhat obvious. The narration is excellent.

Too long

Nothing happened for a very long time.
Not a bad story but long and drawn out. Lots of inhaling and exhaling. People breathe...do we need to be reminded ?
Well narrated .

Duty

Once again this author an alchemist turns a book into a golden experience. Beautifully spoken by Amelia Fox. The characters become for a time like my family. What a family! I have just finished listening and already miss Grace.
