About this listen

Carrot has moved into the Wonder Museum—an eclectic collection of taxidermy, shrunken heads, and Mystery Junk owned by her Uncle Earl. For Carrot, it's not creepy at all: she grew up with it. What's creepy is the corridor behind one of the museum walls. There's just no space for a corridor there—or the concrete bunker, or the strange islands beyond the bunker’s doors, or the unseen things in the willow trees. Carrot has stumbled into a horrifying world, and They are watching her. Strewn among the islands are the remains of Their meals—and Their experiments. And even if she manages to make it home, she can't stop calling Them after her…

Loved this!

The characters were lovable and it was an easy listen, I loved the sound of the museum, I 100% would love to work there, I would have loved another book with the same characters and more museum adventures, maybe a paranormal themed book from a haunted object or something? I just wanted it to be longer maybe! Either way I really liked it, I thought the last part was a bit cheesy and I didn’t understand how the taxidermy could come alive but then the explanation of it was really sweet and I loved that angle! Would definitely listen to it again!

Creepy, and we'll written

the attempt at humour was a little naff, didn't quite land, that's a small criticism. A good listen, recommended.

Uncanny yet playful, like listening to your hilarious ADHD bestie recount a chilling nightmare

I am not a horror genre reader, but I’m not convinced this is a horror genre novel exactly. It’s a portal-to-another-realm tale without any of the boring stereotypical macho tropes. Best of all, there’s zero romance in the story, just really good solid friendships. The “horror” comes from her knack of describing the sort of tricks of perception that happen in bad dreams, the sliding sideways of the laws of physics, and references to a casual alien cruelty.
I think this is truly speculative fiction written for the female gaze.

Unusual

a genuinely unique story/plot, not your run of the mill horror story, definitely a keeper, you won't regret it

Love this author but…

This one fell short for me I’m afraid. It was basically just a lot of running around being chased by monsters. There wasn’t really much story, and only a very small amount of mystery to be solved it really was nothing but a very long scene chase in my mind. But probably quite exciting if you like minor horror chases

Creepy in places but disappointing overall

I got this because I loved Nettle and Bone, but this feels a lot more amateurish. I wouldn’t be surprised if this was author’s first novel. The main character mentions fan fiction a lot and that’s kind of what this feels like, someone trying to make the leap into original fiction (I don’t mean to diss fan fiction by the way, I’ve written the odd piece or two myself). I’ve read this criticism of another of Kingfisher’s books, that it could have been atmospheric and creepy but falls short, and I agreed at the time and think the same point could be made about this. The narrative voice is trying too hard to be snarky and funny and that detracts a lot from what could be a decent horror novel. There was also, as another reviewer said, too much filler, not enough focus on the other world, and the solution was a bit too easy and unsatisfying. Overall, this feels like it was written when the author was very inexperienced and just doesn’t really deliver.

Like someone telling you their weird dream

I almost did not finish this twice but the writing is addictive. At first I kept thinking, wth is this nonsense? But I enjoyed the ending and then the rest of the story makes a bit more sense….sort of…. There’s a bit too much dialogue that can be distracting/annoying but I would read more by this writer.

cute horror

i went into this expecting a proper creepy book, and it is creepy and dark but its quite lighthearted and theres funny moments so its not like a proper horror or thriller. i enjoyed it, it was quite sweet, despite the awful goriness lol 😆

Witty & mesmerising

Witty writing that takes you on a horryfying journey through the-place-in-between the universes adjacent to ours.

Fantastic

Loved the story line I did feel the ending was somewhat rushed I think maybe a couple more chapters to round it off would have worked. But what a beautiful and interesting read already purchased another book
