About this listen

The mesmerising new novel from the winner of the Costa Short Story Award, following her debut novel, Himself.

Maud Drennan - underpaid carer and unintentional psychic - is the latest in a long line of dogsbodies for the ancient, belligerent Cathal Flood. Yet despite her best efforts, Maud is drawn into the mysteries concealed in his filthy, once-grand home. She realises that Cathal, and the junk-filled rooms, are opening up to her.

With only her landlady and a troop of sarcastic ghostly saints to help, Maud must uncover what lies beneath Cathal's decades-old hostility and the strange activities of the house itself.

Initially I liked this, then it just got more and more confusing. By the last few chapters I didn’t have a clue what was going on. All the female characters names begin with M for some reason and sound similar so that got confusing, especially re Margaret Dunn. There was zero explanation as to why she sees the ghostly saints... and how, if she could see dead saints, why she was cynical about Doreen the psychic. As for her missing sister Deirdre... that was like some random totally different story, and I’m still no clearer as to what happened. In the end I was just getting irritated by it. The narrator was good though.

Very Confusing

A wee gem of a book. Bought as a DD and I’m so glad I did. It’s a mystery with some suspense and includes the daily going ons of a couple of best friends. Throw in some saints a couple of shady characters, nurse Ratchet an excellent narrator and you really do have a cracking book. Highly recommended!

Marvelous simply marvellous

Loved the narrator, who made this ok book a bit more bare able.

There were some very funny bits with the saints, grumpy Cathal, and the eccentric Renate.. The chapter of an evening with Doreen the psychic was side splitting.

Despite these well written and amusing parts, I personally did not think it made the book as good as it could have been.

Funny lines but not enough to hold it

Fabulous narrator. Perfection in an audio book. As they say of audio things: 'The pictures are better!'
I just loved it.

Amazing and SO imaginative!

If I'd have been reading this book I wouldn't have put it down! A wonderful story filled with grim and fantastical imagery. I hope there is a follow up book. The characters are interesting and relatable and I would love to know what happens next!

Gripping
