About this listen

This single volume, The History of York, is written by the nine leading experts in their field and traces the story of this historic town from it beginnings as a Roman garrison to the thriving modern town of the year 2000. This an attractive book for both the general listener and the more advanced local historian.

Fantastic history of my home city.

I love this book which I own in hard copy as well - it's a thorough and fascinating history of my home. I hadn't read it for a while and thought I'd give the audiobook a go. I've enjoyed every minute of it and highly recommend it to anyone with an interest in the development of a city over two millennia. There have been complaints about the narration but I quite enjoyed it. There were a couple of glitches and the pronunciation of some local places was a bit off, but otherwise fine.

ties things together

being reasonably local I've studied various aspects of York's history for most of my adult life, from visiting the Coppergate excavations on a school trip to taking part in the regular Leeds food history symposia and various other events. mostly this history tends to be presented in period or subject specific formats, so this was a great overview to look at the progression of history in the city.

The narrator has a good voice but I've marked four stars overall for the various technical glitches in the sound recording, which has a few fade outs and small repeats
