About this listen
Women who changed the face of war: Discover the fascinating histories of women who overcame prejudices, destroyed obstacles, and paved the way for female marines in the US.
Today, only 8 percent of the officers in the marines are women.
We consider that an amazing accomplishment, even though it might not seem sufficient.
But there’s no denying it--the Marine Corps, the last all-male fortification of the US military, has finally accepted that which they couldn’t deny any longer: Women can enlist, train, and combat with exceptional results.
In April 2021, after completing the Crucible, one of the hardest challenges ever devised, pushing marine recruits to their physical and psychological limits, female marines left the field carrying men across their shoulders.
They earned their rightful place among the marines just as much as their male counterparts.
But it took us a long way to get here, to be seen as equals.
The history of women in the marines has never been thoroughly researched. There are numerous stories and books about brave marine men who were bigger than life on the battlefield and in military action.
But the stories of women who did the same are incredibly rare.
The History of Women in the Marines explores the many firsts that women accomplished when they served--from the first woman to enlist in WW1 to the modern-day struggles female marines go through to ensure their acceptance in the ranks.
If you’re looking to enlist yourself, or you’re just interested in the fascinating histories of these female pioneers, you’ve come to the right place.

An informative and fascinating listen
The book is very well researched structured and formatted. The narrative flows well and it takes the reader right from the beginning on a journey in the evolution of the topic. The book covers the challenges for not just women in the marines but also against the backdrop at the time. The author also covers the challenges African American women faced too. It paints a very descriptive picture of what life used to be like and how it has evolved and illustrates that loop holes had to be eg in the Navy to get women into service. There can be a tenancy with a book that references history to either become too deep and dry or not deep enough. The author has got the balance spot on conveying the information but allowing the reader to identify with the characters. If this topic is of interest to the reader you will not
be disappointed. A recommended listen

Very eye catching front cover and excellent read
Listened to this in one sitting in my car on the way home. This for me, was very well researched and well written. A great synopsis of what went before ( with all the struggles and predudice women had to overcome in the male dominated world of the marines). A great insight put together in an understanding time line of events through the age. Excellent

Another Battle for Equality - A Fascinating Synopsis
A fascinating look at American women’s battle for equality throughout history. When do women get to chose for themselves? Whether that is combat or abortion, the battles continue. A Great listen!

Inspiring and an excellent reminder!
This book is an excellent reminder that we should not take our current privileges for granted! The book covers women's fight for equal rights and being able to join the marines, among others. The content is well researched, and the author gives the reader a great understanding of the situation for women in the marines throughout time. I enjoyed the inspiring reading about the early suffragettes, what they went through, and their determination to fight for equal rights for women. In particular, it was an eye-opener to read that women wanting to fight for their country during the early days was not given the same benefits as men and that they even had to pay for their own uniforms! This book serves as a great reminder of what the women before us have fought for and achieved. The book is well narrated and very inspiring - highly recommended!
