About this listen

Brought to you by Penguin.

A young woman pretends to be someone she isn't in this stunning novel by the New York Times bestselling author of The Girls.

Summer is coming to a close on Long Island, and Alex is no longer welcome...

One misstep at a dinner party and the older man she's been staying with dismisses her with a ride to the train station and a ticket back to the city. With few resources, but a gift for navigating the desires of others, Alex stays on the island. She drifts like a ghost through the gated driveways and sun-blasted dunes of a rarefied world, trailing destruction in her wake.

Taut, sensual and impossible to forget, The Guest captures the latent heat and potential danger of a summer that could go either way for a young woman teetering on the edge.

Weird and disjointed

I didn’t fully enjoy the experience of this book but was compelled to keep listening, and wonder if I’m supposed to feel so uncomfortable due to the unreliable narration of Alex the main character. It rambled on in her shallow way all the way through, not an ounce of empathy in her character. I actually stopped listening half way through and listened to another audiobook. But I kept wondering about where Alex was heading and what would happen to her, so I carried on with the book and finished it. I was prepared for the ending being abrupt due to other reviews. I don’t know if I’m reading too much into this book but I was left with this feeling throughout that Alex is a ghost/dead, wandering through things as though gone. Maybe I’ve got the wrong end of the stick and I don’t want to listen to it again any time soon.
Well narrated, and well written. I really enjoyed the way the author allows the reader to get into the head of such a shallow character, it’s quite a creepy experience.

Dull

Oddly paced book where you wait for something to happen. I swore at the ending. Not a satisfying listen at all.

Disappointed

Disappointed end and a let down overall. Nothing about the past of the main character. Very shallow book, expected a lot more

Kept waiting for something to happen

Kept my interest but ultimately amounted to nothing. Felt like it had potential but ran out of steam

A promising story line but weak ending

I just didn’t enjoy this book very much. I loved The Girls and read it twice. This book just didn’t stand up to it…I found parts of the main character well-written but other parts of her a cliche. It wasn’t believable that someone would maintain the pretence that she does, but maybe I just don’t get it? The ending was not good. It was easy listening on my long drives to work but I just didn’t invest my whole energy into it.

Jury's out on this one

Odd....I did expect something to happen at some point.....that's why I stuck with this....at times repedative....at times really good....but was a long ramble to get nowhere....and that I guess is part of what this girls life actually was supposed to be....so I listened to the end....was pretty good

Good book

This book’s ending needs you to use your imagination. I liked the story and characters self belief.

Hmmmm

I really struggled with this, but it was only until I got towards the end that I thought the narration might have something to do with it — there was a kind of dufusication to the male characters’ voices that I found hard to take. That said, I don’t think I’ll be rushing to try again with a hard copy either.

A modern tale

The writing is excellent and the story compels you along in spite of yourself. As for the ending- we all know Alex’s plans won’t work even before she does.
Reader is perfect
