About this listen

Here is the first novel of the famous Balkan Trilogy, previously successfully adapted for BBC television, starring Emma Thompson and Kenneth Brannagh. The book is perfectly suited to audio. Charting the experiences of a young couple caught up in the politics of war when living abroad, it is a compelling story of love, loss and reconciliation.

Harriet and Guy Pringle, husband and wife, are in Bucharest, where Guy works, at the outbreak of World War II. Throughout the Fortunes of War series, they are forced to leave the country, travelling through Greece and ending up in North Africa.

This audiobook has everything: suspense, tension, laughter, tears, travel, and a good dose of action. A detailed account of love against the odds, it makes compulsive listening.

Boring characters

I did not like it when I read it the first time some 25 years ago and I don't like it now. I find it very difficult to identify with the characters or feel any sympathy for any of them
