About this listen

The next gripping volume in The Brighton Mysteries series by bestselling author Elly Griffiths.

Brighton, 1966.

Max, now divorced and living in London, is on the way to visit Ruby and her new-born daughter when he is hailed by an old magician friend Ted English, aka The Great Deceiver. Ted is terrified because his assistant, Cherry, has been found dead in her Brighton boarding house and he's convinced that he'll be accused of her murder. Max agrees to talk to Edgar, who is investigating the case. But what Max doesn't know is that the girl's family have hired private detective duo Emma Holmes and Sam Collins to do some digging of their own.

The inhabitants of the boarding house, most of whom are performing in an Old Time Music Hall show on Brighton pier, are a motley crew. The house is also connected to a sinister radio personality called Pal. Ruby, along with every woman in showbusiness, has heard some disturbing rumours about him.

When a second magician's assistant is killed, Edgar suspects a serial killer. He has the wild idea of persuading Max to come out of semi-retirement and take part in a summer show. But who can pose as his assistant? Step forward WDC Meg Connelly...

It’s a sweet way of navigating murder. Love the whole series. They take you back in time and make you want to meet the characters.

Meg on stage

An enjoyable new adventure for Max and friends. Very well read and easy to listen to. Good characterisation and interesting to see how more recent characters are filling out.

Worth the wait!

Love this series. So original and moves through the years and attendant changes brilliantly. Excellent characters and elegant twists.

Bad performance

As expected from the series. Story quite entertaining but narration was awful - put me off listening.

Really enthralling

I love the Brighton mysteries, and this was all I had hoped for. I thought the narrator was perfect, well chosen for the characters she was bringing to life.

Wonderful

I just love the way this series has developed as more female lead. Whilst Max and Ed are still very much there, the focus being on women and equality really adds to the series.

Can’t make myself to like this series

Just cannot get myself to like this serie. I really enjoyed everything else that I listen by Ellie Griffiths except this. I just find it boring and characters quite shallow. Some of it is due to the narration.

Good fun

Good series of books. A great range of unusual characters. As well as being set in Brighton the books have the great and again, unusual, setting of variety in the early to mid 20th century. Some nostalgia and always a good mystery.
