About this listen
Hank Walker is a softly spoken, affable, chubby-cheeked, long-haired hipster. On the surface it would appear to many that he has the perfect life, the kind of life that many men would kill for.
Hank has a well-paid job as the head of a department at Omni Creative, a graphic design and company that produces images for everything from movie posters to art for upmarket hotels. He has money, a nice apartment, a cool car, and a casual sexual relationship with a former coworker named Audrey.
Hank wants more....
Hank craves affection, and moreover, a fuller, more rounded, and fulfilling life.
Taken by some crazy notion, nervous, shy, and retiring Hank hires Becky Doyle, a high-class escort, to give him “The Girlfriend Experience”. He tells her he’s not interested in sex - he already has meaningless sex on tap. Rather, he wants to go on dates, take her for meals, experience all the little things he has missed out on so far.
Meanwhile in the midway - the world in between all worlds - two ancient pagan Gods (also known as Spirits of Pookas) begin to once again play out their ancient grudge and one-upmanship, and at the eye of the storm these powers create are little Hank and Becky. Their fate is not entirely in their hands. The answer to whether they will torn apart or brought together lies in the hands of mischief and desire.

Loved it!
This book has got real character. I love it when there’s more than one voice so it’s more of a dramatisation. The narrators of this story we both sooo good and they made the experience even better, but I read the paperback of Jack A. Rabbits first book and enjoyed that too. This book is about a really unlikely couple. Hank and Becky are both totally real and I got really invested in them and their relationship. I cried for them and I feared for them. The book is full of clever fantasy, but it’s also manages to be gritty and tender as well! I can’t wait for the next book in the Midway universe!

Fantastic story with great narration!
A brilliant listen! I don’t write many reviews but I was thoroughly sucked into this rich story, so I thought I’d take a moment to comment as the writer seems to be relatively new, though definitely deserving of praise. This is the tale of a guy successful in work and sex, but not in love. His attempt at paying a call girl for a night of emotion actually works and he finds his unbelievable fantasy coming true. The characters are really well developed and I couldn’t help rooting for this relationship to work. Theres a lot at play here, including an exciting streak of fantasy/spirit-world intertwined with what’s happening on the surface of this story. The writer balances the drama and the fantasy impeccably well and it really works. This is not a mystery, but because of the mixed genres it is unpredictable and intriguing from beginning to end. I really enjoyed that this was read by two narrators (a man and woman), as this really enhances the dialogue!
