Summary

Forty years ago, Harriet Vanger disappeared from a family gathering on the island owned and inhabited by the powerful Vanger clan. Her body was never found, yet her uncle is convinced it was murder - and that the killer is a member of his own tightly knit but dysfunctional family.

He employs disgraced financial journalist Mikael Blomkvist and the tattooed, truculent computer hacker Lisbeth Salander to investigate. When the pair link Harriet's disappearance to a number of grotesque murders from 40 years ago, they begin to unravel a dark and appalling family history.

But the Vangers are a secretive clan, and Blomkvist and Salander are about to find out just how far they are prepared to go to protect themselves.

"Intelligent, complex, with a gripping plot and deeply intriguing characters. The author's early death is a great loss." (Philip Pullman)

"What a cracking novel! I haven't read such a stunning thriller debut for years. Brilliantly written and totally gripping." (Minette Walters)

Good slow burner that keeps smouldering

I'm not sure there's a lot to add that won't have been said about the book already, but of the audiobook version; I found the narrator very good with a steady pace, good enunciation and good pronunciations of the Swedish names and places, however I found his slightly ?breathy?, almost overly feminine rendition of all the female characters a little irksome, especially Lisbeth. But then he does have a gruff voice and anything other than breathy may be difficult to associate with a female character.

That said, I found it thoroughly enjoyable and I?m certainly looking forward to the next instalment.

Also found the Audible App for my Android phone really good. I discovered I didn?t have to download ? the stuff onto my laptop I seemed to need in terms of software, and I definitely don?t need iTunes (works fine on Windows Media Player). I also was really chuffed that the Enhanced version of the files worked on my Android as the improved sound quality is noticeable.

Really good

Slow start but when the story gets going you can't stop listening. I listened to this while walking my dog, she got some very long walks! can wait to listen to the next one.

really good

Intriguing plot, and narrated very well. Hugely enjoyable listen, would recommend if you like slightly slower thrillers.

another Stieg Larsson classic

a great story within a story with believable characters you love or hate or even better, can't quite decide. I'd read the second and third books in the trilogy first but didn't suffer because of this.
A great read and highly recommended. Much better than the film adaptation.

Great story with fast-paced twists and turns.

Enjoyed the narration although sometime struggled with the names and characters. Some unusual twists throughout.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I have started the next one in the trilogy and am enjoying getting to know the characters even more.

fantastic book, finished it just a few days, very addictive. shame about the quality of the recording, at the end it cuts out a few times and has a message to turn over the tape

Gone girl with the pearl earring on a train

Takes some time to get going, but rather rewarding in the second half. A murder mystery with a few more layers than usual, and interesting characters. There are a few unnecessary tangents, but perhaps they are there to set up the future stories. Lisbeth is a cool badass, and I’m looking forward to some more development for her as this series continues. Was a bit confused to find she’s not the main character, considering she is the title!

Enthralling

What did you like most about The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo?

The book is written with so much detail that you can picture the whole thing, even down to timings. This is the first of the trilogy - you really need to go for broke and get them all!

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo?

The story builds to quite a climax - not one I expected.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

I could not stop listening - every possible moment I spent with the headphones. Yes, antisocial, but so worth it.

Any additional comments?

Everything about this was excellent. It may take a little time to warm to the narrator, but he does an excellent job, given the Swedish names etc. Do give the whole trilogy a try!
