About this listen
When fiery Bridget Cummings advertised for a lodger, she did not expect a policeman to apply for the room. She wasn't fond of the coppers, believing them to be traitors to the poor of Whitechapel, but her younger brother and sister moved PC Fred Billings in the moment Bridget's back was turned, and she seemed to have little say in the matter. Still, she had to admit that she was glad of his company in the walk back from her late-night washing up job, particularly when a young girl was found in a nearby street with her throat cut.
The discovery of the body of Maureen Flanagan, who was, the neighbours believed, a respectable woman, naturally stirred memories of Jack the Ripper. His horrific crimes had shocked the neighbourhood only 12 years before, but Chief Inspector Dobbs of the City of London Police believed, like most other police officers, that the Ripper was dead. But when a second body was discovered, and Bridget noticed a strange man following her, the neighbourhood was alert to the possibility that the terror had returned....

Decent Enough
Not my usual listen. Murder mystery set in the east end of London at the turn of the centenary Queen Vic is still on the throne. Reminiscent of Jack the Ripper. Bit sugary for me… filled the time while dog walking.

Great plots, twists and turns
Although a gruesome tale it was tempered by the humourous characters brilliantly acted and portrayed by Carla Mendoza.
The story was historically well thought through to reveal the the times and conditions of the Victorian era in East London at the time. .

Very easy listening
A good tale with quite a bit of humour. Light relief from what I usually read. I enjoyed it

Average story, annoying writing style
I was hoping this story would be atmospheric, moody, dark, with a clever story line and good characters. In places the author does create that atmosphere, but it is sporadic. The story line is average (I am only half way through), perhaps it will improve. But I felt I needed to write my review now because of the intensely annoying writing style: there is way too much banal conversation that does nothing to further the plot or expand on the characters. Even worse, the author uses "said" in 99% of conversational responses, which when reading a book may be acceptable, but when listening is very annoying. So for several minutes I listen to "said A", "said B", "said A", "said B", "said A", "said B" and so on. I now fast forward these parts. What a shame that an author actually destroys her own work.

Dreadful Narration
The story isn't too bad, if you like formulaic, caricatured characterisation, but the narration is truly awful. It is every cliched idea of what Victorians sounded like, and I really couldn't get along with it.
It's a big no from me.

Light in tone
A nice easy, enjoyable (if you’ve bothered with reviews you know it’s about murder so move on) read with engaging characters. The narration is a bit fluttery for my taste but that’s a very subjective view.

Very enjoyable
I did enjoy this book , aquired during a sale. Great characters and plot. The descriptions of the Whitechapel area of London in Victorian times was grim but accurate. Great narrator and an easy to listen to book.
