About this listen

Thirteen years ago, Moab Is My Washpot, Stephen Fry’s autobiography of his early years, was published to rave reviews and was a huge best seller. In the years since, Stephen Fry has moved into a completely new stratosphere, both as a public figure, and a private man. Now he is not just a multi-award-winning comedian and actor, but also an author, director, and presenter.

In January 2010 he was awarded the Special Recognition Award at the National Television Awards. Much loved by the public and his peers, Stephen Fry is one of the most influential cultural forces in the country. This dazzling memoir promises to be a courageously frank, honest and poignant read. It will detail some of the most turbulent and least-well-known years of his life, with writing that will excite you, make you laugh uproariously, move you, inform you, and, above all, surprise you.

The Fry Chronicles

This is an excellent self recorded account of his life. His many and varied and honest reflections and anecdotes makes this an easy book to get into. Added to the fact that one can stop and start as required makes this, for me, a must. Perhaps a guarded warning for some, due to his use of language, should be noted, but in this 'unabridged' version it seems to naturally fit into his life style and personality. His easily 'listenable' voice adds to the charm of the listening, making you feel you have a personal appointment with him. Thoroughly enjoyable!

Love Stephen Fry!

I love Stephen Fry's honestly in this book, his way to 'tell it as it is' was done in such a lovely way. I also loved that Stephen is narrating the book himself. Absolutely love his voice.

Our Friend, Stephen Fry

I think we all believe Stephen Fry is our personal friend, and he will be round any minute to join us for dinner and scintillating conversation. This book re-inforces that belief. I felt like Stephen was telling only me about his experience. How filled with famous names, hilarious anecdotes and lovable admissions is this book. Not an ounce of self importance, quite the opposite, and the name dropping is breath-taking, as he does it without arrogance or smarm. I want to hear so much more about his experiences in the BBC and with Radio 4, I want to join Stephen and Hugh Laurie as they admire each other's talent and laugh over old times. Never fear, they will be at my door any minute now. Stephen, we love you, take heart from our genuine affection, and write more. Please.

Candid but not salacious

Stephen discusses his twenties in an account that is detailed but also fair bounces along. I liked the fact that he recognises both his talent and opportunities, but does not do so in an egotistical way. He also talks about his friendships, and others he has worked with, disclosing just enough to keep interest without either disclosing too much or being mean. His voicing of the audiobook really helps to bring the account alive, and I will certainly listen to it again, in part, because it's just very relaxing. A good listen.

incredible 👍😁

Amazing, astonishing, surprising, witty and brilliantly recounted. Any Steven Fry fan should read this. The accents, intonation and candour show a real authenticity and depth of feeling, this feels like a remarkable confession that one is privileged to be privy to.

So glad we didn't go onto the next chapter..

I like the knowledge and learning that Stephen Fry offers, opening windows to worlds that somebody raised on a council estate in South East London can only guess at. Throughout this Chronicle Stephen hints at a dark cloud, which I am relieved to share, did not burst during this publication. Like the last chocolate in the box I shall resist unwrapping the next one for fear of disappointment..

Fry, Fry & Fry again!

A wonderful half-open window into a very complex and complicated man, whose vulnerability makes his prodigious talent even more amazing.
