About this listen

Everyone thinks Heath Rocha was my first love. He wasn't. My first love was figure skating.
Katarina Shaw has always known she’s destined to become an Olympic skater. When she meets Heath Rocha, a lonely kid stuck in the foster care system, their instant connection makes them a formidable duo on the ice. Clinging to skating – and each other – to escape their turbulent lives, Kat and Heath go from childhood sweethearts to champion ice dancers, captivating fans with their scorching chemistry, rebellious style and rollercoaster relationship.
Until, at the Olympic Games, as the world holds its breath, a shocking incident instantly destroys their partnership.
Ten years later, an unauthorised tell-all documentary reignites the public obsession with Shaw and Rocha. If Kat wants to own her story, she must break her silence. As Kat’s account of her dramatic rise and fall alternates with scandalous interviews from the film, The Favourites spins into a dance between passion, ambition and what it truly means to win.
Sensational rumours have haunted Kat and Heath’s every step for years, but the truth may be even more outrageous than the headlines.

Very good but not perfect
Overall, I really enjoyed The Favourites. However, I may seem like a grump but without giving away spoilers for such an intricately plotted novel, in my opinion and this is only my opinion - a few of the key characters were underdeveloped particularly Heath and Bella. Originally I thought with Heath this was to do with how the author used Wuthering Heights as an inspiration/ narrative framework but I think considering the modern context, he was an underdeveloped character considering he drove so much of the book’s action. Ellis felt like a bit of a cliche and it would have been nice to have him feel more real given the likes of Garrett and Sheila are properly fleshed out. That is just my opinion. Katarina wasn’t always the easiest to like or understand but you empathised with her and that was something Layne Fargo is great at. I was not surprised at all in her acknowledgments that she spoke of the influence of Taylor Jenkins Reid. If you liked Daisy Jones, Evelyn Hugo, Malibu Rising - you should like this. Also huge kudos to the author on her building sense of place. The audiobook production was slick and entertaining. I highly recommend this as an audiobook due to the sections that are written as a documentary. Seems like this is getting a film adaptation and with the write cast it could be amazing but please give Heath a bit more! Regardless of my complaints - I see this The Favourites being a huge hit - congratulations to Layne Fargo!

Intense and messy. What an Amazing ride!
Great cast of narrators. The Favourites is so addictive that I struggled to put the book down and do anything else. Very angsty, raw and emotional...loved it and I'll be recommending to everyone I know.
