A good deed

Can turn deadly…

When Liam unexpectedly turns up in Jude’s life after ten years of no contact, asking her for a favour, she just can’t say no. He was her first love, and even though she is now a successful doctor and about to get married, he will always be someone special to her.

But after she does the favour, she is contacted by the police, informing her that Liam has been found dead, and suddenly she is caught up in a murder investigation.

And she realises this one decision could cost her everything—even her life…

Not the best Nicci French

This book is not one of the best Nicci French books that I have read. The narration was very strange & a bit ‘over the top’ in places. I found the story very long & drawn out. I think this book would be much better with different narrator or even actually read instead of listened to.

Odd narration

I liked the storyline and it kept me interested. However I’ve listened to another book narrated by this person before and find them to have odd inflections and intonations that make it sound weird. It almost sounds like a warning when she says some things, and with others it’s like she’s listing things or sounds dramatically fed up. It’s hard to explain, it’s just odd. It didn’t ruin my enjoyment too much but it wasn’t really how people would really speak naturally.

Good story

The narration was so annoying every character sounded bored or irritated - if the story hadn’t have been so good I’d never have finished it

Not great

Story was irritating and nothing seemed to happen. Main character was a pathetic weak sort. Narrators delivery seemed sarcastic and grated. Definitely an average effort.

Not the best Nicci French

Nicci French is one (or rather, are two) of my favourite writers in the sense that I find her novels impossible to put down - or in this case to stop listening to. But she does seem to specialise in female main characters whose motivations are baffling and whose actions seem to be mostly contrary to their own best interests (cf Frieda Klein). Jude in this novel is one such. I felt it stretched credibility that any intelligent woman would have agreed to do the favour she consented to for Liam without further information and after the long time lapse in their contact. I've known a fair few doctors reasonably well, and generally don't find them to be naive, so I just didn't find her believable.

The plot did hold my attention and I found the characters intriguing, if by no means always likeable (which they weren't always meant to be, of course).

Unfortunately I really, really didn't like the narration of this reader. I found her delivery reminiscent of a primary school teacher reading to a class of children, with a lot of over-emphasis and faux surprise.

On the whole, definitely worth a credit, but not the best one I've ever spent by any means.

Well below usual standard.

I sped up the narration, which made it a little more natural sounding, as the speed was excruciatingly drawn out and deathly slow. The accents were idiotic parodies which made the childish characters more detestable.

I wouldn't be surprised if the Nicci French umbrella now includes their children who actually wrote this dross.

I kept listening expecting that the plot would suddenly redeem itself but no, disappointed to the end.

Disappointed!,

The narrator was dreadful - particularly when doing male voices,!, The story was plodding and did not hold my attention but I did listen to the end but I found my self drifting. Having just heard THE favour and The House of Correction this novel was so underwhelming! Please both of you go back to your psychological work

Good story but annoying recital

I personally found Imogen’s style irritating. It felt more like a play than a reading of a book which I found jarring. Not familiar with the work of Nicci French though, I found the story intriguing and for this reason I have tried to stick with it, as I dislike leaving any book part way through. I’m not sure if I will finish it though.

Flawed from.the outset

Supposed intelligent dedicated physician somehow has enough time and stupidity to get herself involved with the one that got away and never apologised for almost killing her in a car crash 11 years earlier. Wake up and smell the set up 'Jude'. So many unanswered questions. No mention of discretion or confidentiality here. How did patronising, gaslighting Nat know about the incident before the police brought Jude home with her tail between her naive legs? A junior doc involved in a murder would be frogmarched off the premises before you can mention ' should i call my lawyer.?' narration was bearable until it came to Jude's mother who sounded like some simpleton from On The Buses. And so the story drones on.....
