Summary
In Scotland, in the not too distant future, Elaine, a partially sighted woman in her 60s, enters an exit facility. Down on her uppers, she is in search of a swift, free, and dignified death so that she can preserve her last remaining asset–a small flat–for her daughter to inherit. But once Elaine has checked in and finds her “Exit” delayed, the enforced wait leads her to question her choice and, more importantly, the state’s motives….
“We have different categories of client here. The first are the Facility’s original category, terminally-ill clients who are in urgent need of Compassionate Closure. Then we have the voluntary clients–people such as yourself who have chosen Closure for their own personal reasons,” the Administrator said.
“What about the third category?” Elaine asked.
“There is no third category.”

Good Tale
A cracking good story and a bit chilling because not out the bounds of possibility.

Gripping and humorous.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It is fast moving and though the subject matter may seem rather somber, it is peppered with a lot of humour. I loved it, and have recommended it to friends.
I'm looking forward to Fiona's next book.

Dystopian page turner
This was a very enjoyable book albeit having a slightly unnerving and dystopian take on the direction modern society might be taking us. I was left thinking about a lot of different issues, assisted dying, but much more as well. Although the book's subject was dark there was a lot of humour and depiction of warm relationships building in this strange no man's land between death and life that the author depicts. It was also great to be reminded of older people still being allowed to enjoy sex and have strong opinions of the opposite sex. I listened to it a lot over a few days to find out what happened next and turn the audible page.

A flowing and well-paced intriguing story!
The narration of this superb story on Audible is perfect. Konstantina's voice fits all the characters and sweeps us away into a world of excitement, involvement and intrigue. It brings the text to life in a flowing and brilliantly paced storytelling. The narrator and author work together to create a magical listening experience.
The story is fascinating as Fiona creates a perfectly realistic dystopian future with perfectly feasible scenarios interwoven with horrifying nightmare pictures of how society could easily go. Romance, intrigue and adventure are cunningly developed to enfold us in this controversial subject of the right to die and assisted death.
This book is just as impactful as an audiobook and will intrigue and fascinate the listener – perhaps even more than reading the book!

A great escape
Hitherto I have always thought that the idea of an 'exit facility' was a logical and humane one for society to look forward to. I am now wondering if I should review my opinion!
The storyline for this novel is excellent. It avoids any obvious easy outcomes that might seem too facile in our cynical world. So it leaves the reader with plenty of ideas to digest and offers a start to a debate on all the issues dealt with. It is well structured and the pacing too is pretty good, with some excellent dramatic moments. I did think, however, that it lost some of it's momentum after the climax of the story. I also liked the fact that the story is seen through the eyes of the main protagonist, which means the reader/listener is as unsure about what is going on (and why) as the main character herself. There is a good cast list of interesting and diverse characters.
Two general criticisms though: I found the dialogue very clunky as it was used as an efficient way of filling out details and forwarding the plot. This meant that a lot of the conversation felt clumsy and unnatural. Secondly, in the descriptions of the facility itself and its routines, I found myself with a lot of unanswered questions.
The reader made an excellent go at conveying the very diverse collection of characters and accents. There were only a few occasions when one didn't quite identify a speaker straight away. It was altogether a good listen that kept me hooked.
