About this listen
What Is the Difference Between Having Empathy and Being an Empath?
"Having empathy means our heart goes out to another person in joy or pain," says Dr. Judith Orloff. "But for empaths, it goes much further. We actually feel others' emotions, energy, and physical symptoms in our own bodies, without the usual defenses that most people have." The Empath's Survival Guide is an invaluable resource for empaths who want to develop coping skills in a high-stimulus world while embracing their gifts of intuition, compassion, creativity, and spiritual connection.
In this unabridged recording of The Empath's Survival Guide read by Pam Tierney, Dr. Orloff shares practical, empowering, and loving advice for supporting empaths through their unique challenges—and for loved ones to better understand an empath's needs and gifts. Here listeners will discover crucial practices, including:
- Exercises to identify where you are on the empathy spectrum
- Tools for protecting yourself from sensory overload, exhaustion, addictions, and compassion fatigue
- Effective strategies to stop absorbing stress and physical symptoms from others and protect yourself from narcissists and other energy vampires
- How to find the right work that feeds you
- How to navigate intimate relationships without feeling overwhelmed
- Guidance for parenting empathic children
- Awakening the empath’s gift of intuition and deepening your spiritual connection to all living beings
For any sensitive person who’s been told to "grow a thick skin," here is a guide for staying open while building resilience, exploring your singular gifts, and feeling welcomed by a world that desperately needs what you have to offer.

Loved it!
This was like a warm hug. I felt understood in a way that was new and wonderful. I also want to mention the narrator. I was really impressed as I usually can't manage a book not read by the author, but Pam did it really well!
I recommend this book to anyone who feels like a misfit for being really sensitive. I've now ordered the printed version so I can access all the great advice and the lists of tools quickly.

I feel seen and heard
The book is incredibly insightful and helpful for those who feel “too sensitive.” Ultimately, we all want to feel like we belong and have a place in this world - this book helped me feel seen and heard in a way I deeply longed for.

So informative and enlightening HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!
I read a few less than positive reviews of this book but had a good feeling about it, so bought it (audible version). I am SO glad I listened to my instinct!!!! Personally I am at the very beginning of understanding my empath self. That said, I think theres an absolute wealth of information, understanding and coping strategies in here that can help people on various stages of their journey. There's also a really useful quick reference at the end to take you to help you quickly find a particular strategy or meditation.
I will listen to this again and again to absorb ALL of the information within!! I felt it made perfect sense and whilst some say it is too 'out there' I question whether they truly are empaths with the understanding they believe to have of themselves, and the universe...
I don't identify with absolutely everything in the book, which is only natural, I am not EVERY type of empath. However I found it EXTREMELY insightful and also an incredibly useful tool to educate our loved ones in order to understand us better!
I HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!!!

A Truly Life-Changing Book.
This book will repay over and over, the effort of reading it... and if it makes sense to you, that's exactly what you will do, read it again and again.
I am 66 years old and only recently have I come across the concept of an empath as a description for a person. Now, for the first time in my life I feel there's someone out there who knows exactly what it's like to carry the burden of other people's pain.
At last, a blueprint for a way of being that helps me deal with the ups and downs of daily life.
Three books have taught me how to live on a practical level. The first, "How to win friends and Influence People" by Dale Carnegie. I found it when I was ten years old and being bullied in school. It was a revelation to me that social skills, were just that, skills that could be learned. This book showed me how to mask the pain and how to stop others picking on me.
The second book, it was on my bedside table for three decades, was "The Language of Letting go" by Melody Beatty. It helped me to rise above the pain and put it in a loving context. Finally, this book expains it all to me.
Thank you Judith.

Enlightening!
This book has given me peace of mind and light to my spirit! If you’ve always felt you’re kinda ‘weird’ and not quite fit in in the world, you’re probably one of us empaths. Owning that sensitivity rather than running from it has been lifechanging, and this book and Dr Orloff’s work have definitely been a part of my evolution.

this will not speak to everybody but it did to me
Judith Orlaff might be more of a transpersonal therapist, or maybe she is not an accredited psychiatrist (I don't know if that's possible or how works in the country she studied). She does talk a lot about energies, spirits, angels, rose water, Chakras, burning wild herbs, etc. This spiritual 'woohoo' approach to Highly Sensitive People is why she calls them 'Empaths'. I can understand why a lot of people who decided to get this book because she keeps repeating she's and MD would be disappointed or irritated by what they get. I, for one, was not always interested in the rose water stuff and the angels (although I am 'guilty' of doing some of the stuff she mentions). I also found it extremely ridiculous that for 99% of her book, Judith is only quoting herself, rather than external sources. In fact there is very little evidence based science in this book. It is mostly about beliefs. All of this said, I recognised myself greatly in this book. It was incredibly eye opening and freeing in many ways. The relationship chapter gave me the courage to express my needs to my partner in the most helpful way. Listening to this book was highly soothing, as an empath/HSP myself. Some people complained that it is repetitive, which is totally true. But empaths love consistency and grounding and this suited me fine. It was varied and interesting enough. All in all I do not regret this purchase one bit. But I'm sure it will leave some people perplexed.

Well written and well narrated
This book was recommended to me by my Therapist, she discovered that I was an introverted empath. As much as I had suspected in the past I had brushed it off assuming it was just a stereotype or a “fad” but alas it is more true than I could ever imagine. This book has been very helpful and provides both spiritual and physical/ emotional help.

Good foundational information
Covered the basics. Introduction to understanding your empath tendencies and developing coping mechanisms. It was a good start but will need to build upon the information received.
